  • G400 Vanilla 32MB and Tribes

    Heya all,

I have a G400 SH 32MB OEM and was wondering how to get the best performance for Tribes. It doesn't run OpenGL on it very well, but I can run D3D maxed out. Any type of registry settings or such to get some better OpenGL performance for Tribes? Im using PD 5.15 with an aperature size of 128MB.

    Thanks,
    -The-Rev-

As an Experienced TRIBESman...U will never get a good framerate in TRIBES. The game looks beyond horrid in ANY resolution on the Max, and your FPS wont be above 20 even in 640x480. This is due to the Pittiful 'add-on' OpenGl drivers Dynamix has tried to throw in after the game was released...On top of the less than acceptable G400 OGL Drivers. Plus the textures for TRIBES in OGL are all screwy...I'd advise software mode, your will get higher framerates

I noticed when I was in OpenGL I noticed ALOT of abnormalities. Tons of serpation and texture problems. I had a feeling it was more of a Tribes problem then the G400. In software mode it runs fine though. Its really too bad Dynamix didnt work hard on the OpenGL for Tribes. It looked really nice and would of been great at a playable FPS and no screw ups. I dont think Matroxs OpenGL drivers are less than acceptable. They run good, and I can play Q3Test smoothly. They need some more improvent though.

        Thanks,

I couldn't even get OGL mode to run on my max. I just get a black screen...sound seems to work, and the game runs in the background, but a black screen....i don't even know how you guys even got Tribes to show up!

The current public ICD (5.13) has problems with texture management and any game/application which uses lot of textures will have visual errors and stalls/stuttering. According to Matrox tech support, the texture management will be improved in next public release of PD5.

Dynamax worked with Nvidia for OpenGL. (the game is a winner on a TNT, go figure) On the G400 it's a mess ! One other reason not to toss out that V2. Even with a new driver from Matrox its still going to be a mutt. Its the gaming code not drivers.
