  • Newbie needs help with G400Max lock ups!!

Although I have been on the 3d board over at 3d files.com for a while, I am new to this board and am turning to all of you for help.

I have read a lot of post on lockups with the G400Max on this site (as well as the others) and wonder if anyone can help me do anything for the time being to lessen this effect until the new drivers are out (assuming they will fix it)

First, I need to list my system:

    Pentium III 550
    Abit BE6 Motherboard
    IBM 7200rpm 22 gig, ATA 66 HD (80 wire)
    Western Digital 7200rpm ATA 66 18 gig (80)
    256 megs Corsair PC-133 Ram
    Kenwood 52X CD Rom
    Diamond MX 300 Sound Card
    Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 Speaker system
13 fans, including three slot one fans
    Matrox G400Max
    Voodoo III 3500
    Custom 400W Power supply
    Nokia 21" Pro Monitor
    Cable Modem

Currently, I am useing the 5.13 drivers, tried the 5.15, did not help. Here is the problem. nearly everything locks up, but at totally random times. When it does, I feel both the processor and the video card and they are cool to the touch. The demo, games, even some benchmarks all lock up!! Tried formating (not easy on a 22 gig), even used the registered version of powerstrip to UNDERCLOCK the card, thinking I got a marginal one, and took it down by at least 50mhz and it did not help. I listed the second HD and the Voodoo although they are not in the machine now, I bought them to test if this BE6 was really running at ATA 66 (used to use an Abit BH6 with the Promise Card) and also wanted to see how the G400 does against the Voodoo 3500. If anyone is interested, I will put up some scores for you showing both the difference in

    1. Western Digital ATA 66 Vrs IBM ATA 66
    2. ATA 66 vrs ATA 33 mode
    3. G400Max vrs Voodoo 3500

I will tell you in short, the IBM is considerably faster than the WD, (both are new) and the G400 is faster in MOST (not quakeII) benchmarks, and ATA 66 makes a big difference in SOME applications.

At any rate, I have been building these things for a long time, got pretty good at trouble shooting problems and am smart enough to know I am not very smart!! So, I need your help. Is it as simple as waiting for the new drivers? Is there anything I can do or try in the meantime? It will not lock up by the way if I am useing it for the net, regular stuff, only games or 3d screen savers, etc. I have tried all the standred stuff, format, re install drivers, etc, but this time nothing works, even the cure all for everything , the dreaded format (at least when we are talking 22 gigs!!)

I know you are all probably tired of answering this question, I am sorry, and I will try to help anyone with their problems if I can, I have learned the hard way how to tweak the bios, etc ( I think I could format and fdisk in my sleep) and would be glad to help anyone that might have a problem I can lend a hand to.

I recently gave away (to those less fortunate and would never be able to afford one) a Diamond Ultra Viper TNT2, Obsidian X-24, ATI Fury 32, meg, and some other stuff. In retrospect, probably should have kept the X-24. was over a pound and a foot long, but whar a powerhouse in one slot!!

Thanks for any ideas you can send my way. I have not been able to play a complete game since I put it in. BTW, the download of freespace2 is so slow in the second half of the game (1024x768, 16bit) that it is unplayable. anyone else have this problem? Thanks again, sorry for the same old stuff but maybe someone has some thoughts.

What kind of lockups are you experiencing? hard lock up? Blue screen? Does Ctrl-Alt-Del work? I had a BH6 and was experiencing lockups, especially when going from 3D mode back to 2D mode. The blue screen would come up, and then the system would totally hang. This seemed to be only in D3D titles for me though; games like System Shock 2, Descent 3...etc. Quake3Test and Q2 seemed to run pretty stable for me.

Anyway, I have since changed to an Asus P3B-F, and the problems have all but dissapeared. I have heard a few incompatibilities with G400s and the Abit boards. Maybe you should try an Asus or Soyo. Hope this helps.

They are hard lock ups, clt, alt, delete does not work, have to hit reset button. No blue screen. Just bumped my voltage to 2,10 but it made no difference, screen saver just locked up!! Thanks!!

          How do U have a G400 AND a V3 3500? I thought the 3500 was a single-card solution, not a daughterboard like the V2

                Hi..

i've had similar problems with a g400 MAX on my Abit bx6 board...

                forceing AGP1x solved my problems...
you can get the reg key to do that at MURC
