• windows 2k.... WOW...

i tried windows 2000 on another partition and i was impressed BIG TIME..... for me to completed a WU takes 20 hours if my computer is idle using win9x/linux..... but for win2k..... only about 11 hours.... isnt that amazing....

on another note, winamp takes 20% in win9x using wave out, and only 9% in win2k.... i say microsoft has made some great improvements to this OS..

I've got to agree with you. The finest OS I've used. BeOS 5 is also very nice but pretty useless to me (personally).

The most usable family of OSes finally gets stable and reliable!

yes, as far as compatibilty goes, its great... it's the only MS OS that supports all three of the main MS filesystems, fat, fat32, and NTFS...

i found that after using for a week, i had almost no problems, and the installation was so easy... you can do a boot from the cdrom, and startup is fairly fast compared to win98, and is much more user friendly than win9x...

it is compatible with both opengl and d3d..

microsoft can finally be proud to be microsoft.... i don't understand why win2k didnt get even more attention that they already did..

my ONLY problem with it is that it requires a whopping ~600megs just for installation... for the moment i'll stick to win95 until i get something bigger than 6.4 gigs HD...

When I first installed W2K, on a P2-350 w/ 64MB ram, I wasn't all that impressed. It's pretty, but it's very sluggish. Then I installed it on my new P3-650, 256MB ThinkPad, and boy-o-boy, this OS is awesome. Fast, stable, easy to use, and all that. I guess as long as you have the hardware to back it up, this baby is king. Just make sure you've got bags and bags of resources

yeh, since they have a well-built kernel, u dont need a top-of-the-line CPU, or anything close... my K6 works fine...

but what you DO need is heaps of ram... they say recommended is 64.... but i would say that is minimum.... it runs fairly well but it will run MUCH better with 128 or more...

btw, what is the next release of windows to follow windows 98 ???? and what is windows ME ???

Windows Me (Millennium Edition) is the follow up to Windows 98. It looks like Windows 2000 from the desktop - My Documents at the top, with My Pictures as well inside it. It is however still based on the DOS kernel (as opposed to 2000's NT kernel) so it's a quite a bit less stable.

Whistler is the next NT based OS and it should replace both Windows 2000 and Windows Me - it also is expected to be the basis for Microsoft's .NET project (where all of my apps and files are stored on their server so I can work from any internet appliance worldwide - with all settings etc intact). Windows Infomation Centrum has a Whistler preview up with screenshots.

            Paul.

                  Yes, as Guru says!

Think of Me as Windows 98 Third Edition - it is just 9x with a few tweaks - just like 2nd Ed was. 98 had IE4+DX6, SE had IE5+DX61 and Me has got IE5.5+DX7 - spot a trend here?
