• i815 board but what CPU? - for Seti :-)

I'm getting a Super Micro 370SSM with an i815 chipset for my 2nd machine. I know this can run RAM independently of the CPU speed but does this help Seti? I'd like to use a Celeron 600 in it and save some of my budget for my next upgrade (moving my P2 upto P3/P4) but is it's performance really hindered in Seti by that 66MHz FSB? Seti will be it's main performance duty - otherwise it will be web/email and Word etc. so I'd like to boost performance in this area. Buying a P3-733 or a 750 will completely eat my budget - but it is within range.

Anyone got some times for a Celeron 600 when running on a 133 RAM speed? I've looked at Guru's performance graph and the dismal Celeron 850 performance but does the RAM in any way make up for this? (I presume that this was a 66Mhz RAM machine Guru?)

So - the question is - does 133MHz RAM help in Seti even if the processor is running on 66, 100 or 133?

Paul.

If my CUSL2 is indicative of the i815 capabilities, then you 4 ratios to choose from (FSB/RAM/PCI):
66/100/33
100/100/33
133/100/33
133/133/33

So, as you can see, 133MHz RAM is only possible with 133FSB.
Unless (and this may be specific to CUSL2) you overclock from the 66/100/33 ratio, but this will quickly get your PCI roasting and there's no way to go under spec on PCI.
So, let's say you can to 41 PCI safely, then you'll get 82/124/41.

No this was on a 100MHz BUS! And with a BX chipset (at the moment the BX chipset offers the best memory performance). The Celeron 2 CPU's are not to recomend for runing SETI! The use of a 133MHz memory BUS will give you a big performance boost in seti even if the CPU is using a BUS speed of 66MHz! If you are on a thight budget by a duron 600 and overclock it! But if you are wiling to spend some more money buy a 700 MHz FCPGA copermine.Make sure you get one with the Cb0 stepping most of them (or should I say all)will overclock to 933MHz (133MHz FSB) with the use of a good cooler (=G-ORB).

Thanks guys - I'll email Super Micro and see what's possible. And when I say I'm getting the board - I don't mean buying - spare one left over! So I've to fill it with a CPU - and with Super Micro's record I don't think I'll be able to overclock (Cel600 @ 900?).

And oops! I, er, must apologise for my stupidity - a Celeron 850 on a 66 bus! Er, I have no excuse...

So to clarify my position:

I have a P2-350 with a 20Gb and a 4Gb in it. I have a spare ATX case, mouse and monitor so I was planning to buy a CPU and keyboard to go with this board I'm getting

So I want to have 3 machine's - my P2 with 256Mb is getting treated(?) to Win2k Server, the Celeron is for the rest of my family for E-Mail/web with Win2k and I'll be getting a P4, G800 next year! Sound good? So if I save money here I'll spend more on the P4 (or P3 is the P4 is crap ). The Celeron will also come into use on LAN days (with an slight boost in the AGP department ).

Anyway - enough of all that - the only factor I'm unsure about is Seti performance - I know the Cel600 will be worse than the 750E but - how much worse? Anyone with times?

Some prices (no 600s):
Cel633 - £85
P3-700 - £175
P3-733 - £175
P3-750 - £215

It's painful to look at P3s at twice the price though!

Yes but twice as fast in SETI!

Painful to think that all that power/cost would just be for Seti...ach, what the hell!

Anyone got a WU time for a Celeron 633?
