  • Help a new guy with some crashing??

Hi seti guys! Figured I'd give this a try as it is a good cause. But the Seti3.0 client (win98) will crash my system and need a reset(hard). It happens when my system has been idle for a long time. And it doesn't happen with other screensavers. System is as follows. Please help as I have some spare cycles (like all day while at work and after I hit the hay at night) And I have always thought that we should be doing more of this sort of thing.

    ------------------
    AsusP3B ,iCeleron525(7x75), 128megs PC133, G40032megSH, Diamond MX300, 13.5gigs of HD's, 52X CDrom and 98SE w/shutdown patch, PD 6.04,Altec Lansing ATP3,Envision 17incher,1 grey cat, 1 black cat and 1 calico
AMD XP2100+, 512megs DDR333, ATI Radeon 8500, some other stuff.

This isn't really a solution, its more avoiding the problem really....

You could try the WinNT command line version. It works fine in 98 and is faster than the GUI version too

When seti is active your system will actualy use 99% of your cpu!!!! This does realy sound like an cooling problem and not as an software/os problem!

I'd think that that Celeron 466 is a FC-PGA though so that should be fine at 75MHz FSB. RAM ok too unless you are running the timings at 2-2-2 (which you should be ). The only other problem I can see is the 13.5gigs of HD's - what is the smallest one of these and how old is it?

        Paul.

I don't think it is a heat or oc problem at all. I have had this mild oc for over a year and no probs with any other prog. I can run 3dmark99max in loop mode, or run quake3 demos or do whatever for a long time with no probs. I also can touch the heat sink and it is warm, but not hot. No typical heat related symptoms either. My oldest hard disk is a Fujitsu 3.2gig udma33 one with no probs. The other is a 10.2 gig udma33. I can't remember the name of it right now, but it is a good name brand one. I have pc133 memory (Hundai?) I really don't think it is a oc heat issue. Altho I am new to Seti and computers are weird...

            Bohrn,
What kinds of software are you running in the background? I have 2 machines at work with older (4.0?) Norton A/V and 98SE with "shutdown patch and they both lock after being "idle" with SETI 3.0 GUI installed. Both machines work fine and run faster with CLI 3.0 though.

Bohrn! Don't confuse Seti with any other screansaver! Normaly screansavers use only a few % of your system (CPU) resourses! Seti uses over 99%!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seti is actualy one of the best ways to test stability of your system! My CPU runs 3,5C higer temp when using seti than it does in 3D Mark 2000!
