  • Seti and FreeBSD

Hey all. I'll be setting up a Dual Celery rig to run as an internet gateway for home in the next couple of days. I'll probably pop on the latest incantation of FreeBSD. It's going to be pretty idle most of the time, so thought i'd get it to crunch a few work units in it's free time... Which leads to a few questions.

    1. Does Seti run ok on FreeBDS?

    2. I don't have a permanent internet connection, so can i cache a bunch of WU's the same way i can with Win2k?

    3. Can i use 2 processors to crunch 2 separate WU's at the same time.

Hope i have explained things properly and asked the right questions.

    Thanks in advance.

    G.

    1. Yes, you should probably use the i386-unknown-freebsd3.3-client, found here. See some of the notes at the top of the page.

    2. Yes, you can cache WUs. Either use the FetchCache and RunCache scripts that seti@home made available, or create some scripts of your own, or use Setiproxy (Java required).

    3. Yes. Just start 2 seti's, in different directories.

    Good luck,
    Martin

Could you not even use a Windows machine with SetiQ to cache the units for the whole network?

Dunno what's best, just suggesting !

Thanks for the pointers Ess. Sounds like just the trick.

        Hey Pace.
I do have a Win2k box on this network. I'm currently running the command line Seti in conjunction with SetiDriver. Please forgive my ignorance/stupidity here, but are you saying that my BSD box can grab cached WU's from there?? That would be convenient because it would avoid any double handling. Any directions much appreciated.

Oh, one more question here. I'm not trying to start an O/S flame war here, but what do you guys think would be best for crunching Seti units - FreeBsd or Solaris 7? For the purposes of the gateway, either will be just fine, but if one is a little better for WU crunching then i'll run with it.

        Cheers,
        Giskard

If the machines is on local network, you can on the windows-machine run SetiQueue, and get this to cache units for all machines.
While we are waiting on Pace, here is a guide:
