Ahem. This is a UK based web site, run by a UK admin, who has set the time to be UK's time (Thanks Ant!!). Pretty Please with a cherry on top can we have the club stats as DD.MM.YYYY ??

I wouldn't mind dd.mm.yyyy as it's more natural to me, but seeing that a LOT of the readers are US'ers I just thought that....oh well, I'll just try it the other way around and if no one complains, that's the way it's going to be.

Well, the ISO begs to differ. According to International Standard ISO 8601, the correct format is YYYY-MM-DD. It makes sense, since it follows the HH-MM-SS format of time, ie. biggest unit to smallest. Therefore, date and time together would be YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS, get it?

Just another example of both the US and the UK not accepting international standards. Metric system anyone?

As an future Mechanical Engineer in Canada, I can say that I'll be mixed up for decades... Although Canada is "officially" metric, our southern neighbors (USA for the geographically challenged ) are pretty strong and are the makers of a lot of different machines (and pulleys, screw, tubing, etc.)(they also decide a lot of north-american norms). So, we have to adapt our plans (which should be in metric) to be able to fit those english system dimensions.

What's worse, it's pretty impossible to give a plan in metric to a machine shop without getting a mistake in it because 90% of the time, they'll convert it back to inches!

And don't even think about talking about millimeters to someone over 50!

Well, at least calculating stuff (abeit thermal, fluid dynamics, stress or other) is a Helluva lot easier with the metric system.

Oh, and to stop ranting and give my opinion on the current subject :
-Preffered Format : YYYY-MM-DD
but DD-MM-YYYY is also good.

Now, I honestly don't happen to care what format is used. I took German classes for 4 years during my Junior High and High School career, so I'm used to the European format. (don't ask me to speak in German, it's been 3 years since I last took a course and my memory extends little beyond a basic understanding anymore)

Anyway, Kruse, I think I will challenge you. The ISO format makes sense. Why though does DD.MM.YY make more sense than MM.DD.YY? I can't see any reason to use one over the other myself. I tend to use DD.MM.YY myself, simply because I got into the habit of it from my German classes, but I also use MM.DD.YY when I know someone will be confused if I don't.(like when I'm writing checks, and yes it is spelled C-H-E-C-K, not Cheque)

So, hows about it? Why DD.MM.YY?

Well MM.DD.YY is silly I think! It has no order whatsoever. DD should either be last or first, depending if you consider it to be the most important part of the date, or the least. It is probably the least important part in the grand scheme of things, but in this context, it's what day that counts for the stats.

Since everybody seems to have an opinion on this, I figured I'd share mine also...

YYYY-MM-DD (also called universal or military date format) is the only real way to go (ISO rules! . If for some reason that is not acceptable, certainly DD-MM-YYYY is the best of the alternatives. Don't make me explain why... you have been warned!
