  • 3rd party Seti Software

I know a lot of you people use these cache programs, and I know some are better than others, but Im trying to fancy my computers out. If you can answer these questions, it would be a lot of help.

    1) I want to simply know how long it takes the machine to pump out its Wu's.. no extra garbage, just how long it takes.

    2) I am using this P.O.S. software called SetiRunner I believe, it caches 20 wu's, then you upload them to the server, it doesn't work that well, I was wondering if you guys knew another program that will cache *lots* of wu's... something like a x specified value, and when ready, you can upload.. ?

    3) I got a few machines here on a LAN, all dhcp. Set up 1 as a server, then they send it back to the machine, then 1 machine upload 1 f*cking huge set of Wu's, not really important, because all machines have internet.

    4) If I start a new SETI account, can I give my old wu's away ?

    5) www.setimurc.f2s.com is down, for me at least.

    6) I got all my machines running the cli3.0 without any other software, just straight up cli + internet, you guys recommend me trying something out.. Im all ears..

    Thanks Murc...

I am no expert but I use seti driver from http://home.sprintmail.com/~obermd/SETIDriver/
I cache work units on my 3 home machines then send them off every morning when traffic is light.

On my home computers I don't use any kind of cache software! Insted I runing a bat file on the computers and upload manualy! Works bether for me plus I save some memory that way!

      1) Depends on what computer you are talking about! I will update the performance chart later this week so check it out!

      2) Give SetiDriver or SetiQ a try!

3)Was that a Q or are you trying to make a point here?

      4)No!

5)Me to! To bad we cant aford a bether host for the site!

6)What software did you use for that? Give setishell a try!

I use SetiProxy. It's a Java app, so it'll run on any platform with a JRE. The only drawback with it is that it'll only cache up to 200 WUs. Nice configurability though. I'll try to answer each of your questions for this product, and I'll let someone else report on the others (SetiQueue is a popular one).

        1. Once the transfer is kicked off, it's speed is only limited by your net connection and berkeley's servers.

        2. You can schedule uploads for certain times of day, set it to upload whenever it wants to, or manually kick off the tranfers. No setting for "transfer when x units remaining", or "transfer only when queue is empty" though.

        3. As long as the server machine is accessibly by a consistant name (dynamic DNS) there's no problem here.

        4. WUs cannot be transferred from one account to another.

        5. Down for me too.

Since all your machines have internet access, you could also try SetiDriver. It runs on each machine and maintains a separate cache of WUs on each machine. Whatever you find easier.

Er, setimurc is down? Try http://www.setiatmurc.f2s.com - is that better - or was it that site that you meant to type?

Looks like this SETI Driver stuff will work good. If I can cache like 200 units, I will be good when I go to xmas vacation. Come back and upload like a hooker.
            http://www.setiatmurc.f2s.com is hella down.

I dont think I should worry about proxy`ing stuff, so thanks for the help anyways.

It seems so damn difficult to upload to berkeleys servers... damn hippies over there.

            Anyone else here tried SetiDriver?
It caches then... you upload and your done? Is it just that easy?

Yeah Zyn, it's that easy. I use it on a spare laptop that so I don't have to keep it connected all the time. It's locked in the cabinet over my desk crunching away, and I transfer it's units every couple of days.

A suggestion for when you go on vacation: set each machine for 200 units. Download the units. Set back to a sane number of units before leaving for vacation. This way, when you come back and transfer all the units, it'll send the results without getting new units. I don't think you'd want to normally run with caches that big on each machine.

                  Zyn,

There should be a way you could keep your old WUs under your current account. If not, just let the old one flatline and have two accounts, both for MURC.
