• That's about it...

I think I've about had it with this project. Big shame since they only just seem to have managed to stabilise the servers.

    It's like this:

In version 2.x I had nice times on my home pc of 5-6 hours per WU. I could tweak my pc and see a general decrease in WU times.

Then with version 3.0 times climbed to 7-9 hours(*). And it didn't really seem to matter what I tweaked.

Now finally with version 3.03 my WU times fluctuate in the range of 11-23 hours. Tweaking is literally a town in mid-England now. All that matters is what patch of darkness the server sends me.

And that's not all. I used to be a moderate contributor in this group located in the top 30 WU-wise. After 3.03 I'm about to fall out of the top 50 indicating that many others do not see the violent speed decrease that I do (or everybody just happened to upgrade in the same week).

So, what's the plan? Well. I'll leave my three pc's running Seti for a bit longer to see if things should change for the better. If they don't - and I seriously doubt they will - at some point in a very near future I'll sign off, walk away, and not look back. It's simply not fun or challenging anymore.

    Sorry guys!

(*) On the two other pc's under my control that run Seti, 3.0 times were lower than 2.x times, but not so on my home pc - the only one I can tweak...

      Zyn:

Down, Boy! There's no need for SHIT like that! Some people crunch Seti purely for science and some of us do it for the fun of competition and the satisfaction of tweaking our computers to the limit. There are plenty of people here feel the same as Kruse.

For the record, I agree with Kruse and Sir Hitech. It doesn't mean one is a "crybaby" just because one happens to be pissed off at the increase in processing times.
Yes, I know everybody is affected, and yes, I started crunching seti units for the science. After I joined the forum with around 700 WUs crunched in a year, I have crunched another 1700 in 5 months, encouraged by the competition and tweaking help and, yes, "fun" of the forum.

The whole mood seems to be changing.

I'm afraid that I am another victim...

I had dropped the torch a while back, then picked it up due to the spirit and competitiveness of the group(s).

Now, with work taking more and more of my time, and less available to keep my 4 home systems going - 2 with SETIDriver, 2 Linux with nothing else, I'm just getting tired of it all.

1 year, 8 months of actual member time, and over 4 years of processing time.

          Not too bad.

My units will stay with MURC, and if I ever get the bug again, this will be where I look first.

Thanks for the fun ladies and gentlemen...

Used to do a unit in ~3h whith my p3 700@1000+ now it takes 9-15h! My T-bird (1GHz) used to crunsh a unit in ~4h now it takes over 7h! And I have seen now improvment on the seti servers! Also after I updated to 3.03 I have gotten 4 units so far that has stoped after ~20% and I have not got any credit for them! Plus that the 3.03 gui seems to have some kind of memory leak since I have to restart it every now and then becouse it reports it does not have enough memory to run (w98 se 128mb ram nothing else runing)!

Guru, if I remember correctly, all 2.x and later NT-cmd-clients has resource-leaks under win9x. I don't remember if the gui had this problem also. You can try digging around in this forum to see if you can find something.
As I remember, the conclusion was either reboot once a day, or run NT.
The "not enough memory" is the penalty of using an OS that relies on win3.0-memory-resources.

As for people stopping seti@home because 3.03 is "too slow", you've just joined the largest seti@home-group. The second-largest are the people that didn't manage to return any result at all.
My v2-account is a member of the largest group

Guess not dude, but around here, you have to be more politically correct then in washington! For example,

She is not a BABE or a CHICK - She is a BREASTED AMERICAN.

She is not EASY - She is HORIZONTALLY ACCESSIBLE.

She is not DUMB - She is a DETOUR OFF THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY.

She does not have MAJOR LEAGUE HOOTERS - She is PECTORALLY SUPERIOR.

She is not a TWO BIT WHORE - She is a LOW COST PROVIDER.

You have to appreciate the small amount of patience some of these users have in this forum. as for the rest....

I too am dying off quietly...

Quite frankly, I only contribute about 5% of Team Narc's production, but I am the team's founder and I am the on that is always informed about S@H (through you guys). I know about the new science for v3.03, but most of my team doesn't, so they don't understand why the new manditory version is slow as s...

After seeing the real reason why this new science was implemented (thanks to a few dorks at ArsTechnica), I don't really want to continue. I know that I'm letting a few hooligans wreck a great project, but I was in here for the distributed computing aspect, not for the alien intelligent life finding part. And I don't honestly believe we're making progress there...

I'll continue to put some WUs in the bag, but I'm not actively finding any more computers...

I'd hate to say "I told you so", but I said that this would be a bummer for the project, when I heard that the versions were getting slower and slower. Now I'm finding out that I'm not the only one that thinks this way...

It's been fun, but 11 months (6.44 years CPU) and more than 4100WUs later, it isn't as fun.

                          What if's:

If Seti wants us to use our powerfull PCs to see if there is life out there, then why would they want us to slow down?
If Seti was a realtime, up to the job, organization, they would've had the bandwidth to power us.
If Seti is really on the lookout for life out there, would they really need us?
Those are just a couple of examples I thought up. I know that from reading their page, we can strike off numbers 1 & 2.
                          And maybe 3.

I quit some time ago, after they gave us 3.03, and made it mandatory to go to that version over 1.06 and 2.04 ... Those 2 versions were giving me good times, but 3.03 was giving me shit times, even on a P900. If they really want their access server times down, then they should make a program that will only allow one WU per user. Not the "this user d/ls 20 WU's and uploads 25 in return" way of doing things.

I wasn't in for the listing in a group. And that they allowed groups to participate was maybe their worst choice. It might look good in the books, but not if people want to be 1st in their group, and their group being 1st on the overall list.

Maybe I hope for a total crashdown of their servers again, for them to reformat, start all over. One can only learn from experience, right?

Or what about compressing the WU's and have the client uncompress them! That would save them ~90% of bandwidth!

Can't say I've been crunching much of late either... 3.03 is slow and it's a lot of hassle to start and stop seti on my machines all the time. I'm planning to hit the 11000 mark then cut back my crunching to just my desktop. I too have noticed a mood change lately. The mood was what inspired me to take my 4 WU account last august and turn it into a 10000 WU account by the end of the year (being one of the only people, if not the only person to hit 1000 WU/week) ... now that's crunching
