• To those who wish to leave Seti...

It appears that not only the production has went down, but also the number of active users in the team. So, I presume some might just be giving up entirely, switching to other projects or waiting for the new ultra-fast V4 client

Whatever you are doing, how's about still dedicated those CPU cycles to the MURC? If we could have a specific project which is nominated as our secondary project, then Matrox Users would again be a top team in that! However, there are many projects which may take your fancy, but if we have a vote, would you's all join the nominated project? I still plan to use Seti, but I've been looking at the other projects (RC5, Folding etc) to try and see which is the best alternative to Seti.

Please voice your opinions on whether you have switched to another project, or are considering it, as I'd like to try and keep the MURC strong in this area!

Rattledagger has put up a mini-comparison of Entropia, Seti and Folding in Kruse's thread, but what about you's RC5 users? There must be a few. And anyone else using different one's, such as Genome@home?

Incidentally, there already is a Matrox Users team for Genome, use team number 633096920 if you wish.

Regards,

Paul.

I might be in, RC5 and folding seem to be my votes, although I'd look into other options too..

The only thing I'm really going for is ease of use, ideally a program runing like S@H's screensaver.

Well I'm trying Genome@home at the moment, check out this little page I've just knocked up.

I've set up a team anyway, just to make sure MU gets any appropriate credit

Paul.

Edit: What other considerations will you take into consideration? Caching? Quality of stats? Reliability of server (note: read Rattledaggers post!)

I'm trying it as we speak.

Caching is not really important at all for me since it sort of goes against the "ease of use part. But I do know that it's a big deal for most of the big crunchers.

The stats *DO* make an important difference for me, and a lot of others.

And of course the server, although I've been a lot less picky than some of the others on SETI, and this without caching programs.

Add program stability, and a "auto-turn on" feature. I don't like it when the program always runs (ie. when I'm using my computer), just when it's in sleepy mode. I'm giving away cycles, but I don't like to squeeze every last drop.

Anybody else??

Now we get into the interesting and heartening part of the project. Unlike folding, Genome@home is cacheable. I have not had the time to play with the client too much, to determine what is necessary for implementing a caching scheme. I have a list of the files that the program unloads during install. If any of you would like it, email me.

Because of its cacheability, Genome@home will be more user friendly and practical for those people with a dial-up connection.
I'm guessing that this means a batchfile caching scheme, and I don't know if Genome will be popular enough to attract more sophisticated methods available for Seti, but it's a caching option nonetheless.

btw, I see a few of our larger crunchers have given up Seti a while ago, maybe towards RC5 I dunno. D'ya think I should post this in TSB as well to attract attention from the non-Seti-ers?

Might be worth posting to all forums to try and get poeple into a discussion about if and where they'd like to contribute.

Paul what are you doing with your website? Are you still planning to join up with seti.matroxusers.com, if not and you want to run a murc teams site covering seti and genome etc just let me know if you want server space.

Genome@home seems like it can become a good project. It's like seti@home an academic project.

Some facts:
Needs 64MB memory, 24-48h/wu, not screen-saver, win32/linux-client, like seti@home run multiple clients if multi-cpu.

So for the bad news:
The current client discards the wu if it's stopped, and downloads a new. This should hopefully be fixed next week with new client.

Ant: I was thinking of either seti.matroxusers.com or my own hosting company I would still like to merge Martin's stats with the site, and add a dynamic news page. I'll work on getting this feature at least, and I'll play a little more with Martin's stats pages to see if I can improve (the existing design seems rather nice - simplicity isn't dead yet )!

I'm off to cross post this, to see if we can gain interest as you mentioned as well.

Rattledagger: The CLI client uses around 10-12MB as I've seen, compared to 11-14MB for Seti.

RC5 is a waste of time. It doesn't have a puprose that I feel like supporting.

The Genome project looks interesting from an academic standpoint, but there are already hundreds of corporations and universities around the world working on it in one way or another.

The only way the SETI project gets much support is through volunteers, which includes the SETI@Home project.

I do S@H for two reasons. First, because it is fun to watch the stats and all that jaz. But more importantly, this is a project that I like and it is one that I want to support. Are we likely to find that miraculous signal from another planet? Not likely, but I don't happen to care.

Basically, I will not support any other project than S@H. The rest of you do what you like, I'm content right where I am. Besides which, if you all leave I can eventually work my way up to #1 maybe.

Ian: I believe that Seti will remain the primary team effort, but it's for those who do not like the new 3.03 times. I too will stick with Seti (unless Genome or others really impress me) but I just felt we didn't want to just lose those who were leaving.

Good to see some more Seti commitment though Though I dunno about that #1 spot

Well, at the start of my Seti@home project I told myself I will give a year of effort and try for that elusive 10K mark. I'll have to triple my current output with 3.03 to have a chance to hit 10K within four months. That aint gonna happen.. However, I will continue to crunch for the 10K goal ;and while I am at it might as well have some fun doing it. Guru and Ees's weekly charts really gave me the boost to continue (4th in production this past week )

Guru:

Buckle up! I am coming after you!

Yes, my results are way down, but there is no way I am leaving seti, after 2500 WUs, I will stay till the end. I have only 2 machines now, slowly but surely I will get to 3000 one day. I sure don't want to start crunching a different project.

Guess personal objectives are really important. My personal objective was 30th place (I started 418th, so I never thought..), but that objective has been achieved. Now I'd like to set myself a new standard, but my production just keeps slowing down... I want to get to 5000 WUs, and I'll certainly acheive that goal, but the fire is gone.

So I'd like to recommend something for you all : set your standards way too high, like 1000WU/week with V3.03...
