  • Why is everyone so concerned with the slower WU times?

I don't understand why everyone is so concerned with the slower processing time of the new client. If everyone is seeing slower times why should you care? Relatively speaking it shouldn't matter as most of us have machines running SETI 24/7 anyhow. The ones who should be upset are the ones like myself who built Xeon machines (I finished my 1Meg xeon box 2 months before the anouncement of the new client, what a bitch)
just for crunching SETI. I'm not upset however as overall I am still capable of producing in the top 30 here if my machines are left running (which lately they haven't been). Another question. If everyones so proud when they hit say 1000 WU's or 10,000 WU's why would you want to throw them away because your times are 2 hours longer, aren't everyone elses going to be longer too? Seems like a senseless waste, you go back to sqare one with any new project and run the risk of havingsomething similar happen all over again. Maybe everyones just bored with SETI, but I would prefer to contribute to a project that I am actually curious aboout. Maybe everyone should watch Contact again.

        PIII 650 @ 820 went from 4.5 hrs to about 7hrs.
        Cel 366 @ 550 went from 7hrs to about 10.5 hrs.
It's just a matter of time & we'll all get used to it :P
I certainly won't be quitting 'cos of longer WU times

Perhaps your systems are messed up somewhere?
            P3-750@825 from 4.5h to 7.5h
It's not a big jump. I haven't checked my other machines though.

            How about,
            P133 from 37h to 66h

The fastest version for me was definitely 3.0. After that, it's 2.4, 1.06, then 3.03. Anyway, I'm definitely not leaving, after putting so much work into getting SETI running on a bunch of machines.

No two hours longer here, went from 4,5 hours to 8+ on my P!!! 900, my P2 450 went from 8 hours to 14+

Giving two credits for every WU would give me about the same weekly output as 3.0 gave me...

My point was if everyones production has slowed, relatively everyone elses should also. So why the concern? (I'm not trying to light any fires but I'm just curious and obviously have nothing better to do at this time of night)

                  Pete,

Well, for one thing, all the "races" have slowed down to a snail's pace, and some people just were getting tired and the new version just was too much...

It's as if the new version is pushing the fanbase to the limit. And A LOT of people are leaving not just on team MU, just look at the graph I posted on this thread.

Being one of the ones that has left S@H (now on to bigger and better things ), I can say that would have taken a 2 to 4 hour hit, but almost three times??? It hurts my little novice computer building ego. Hey would you like it if your Xeon box took 15 hours to complete some work units?

I'm not saying that no one accepts the new science. Like I said before, I liked the distributed computing aspect, and wasn't all up and up about the looking for aliens part. Thats why "more science" didn't make as much sense for me. I'm now crunching at Genome@Home, on a cause I can really see some usefulness (sorry guys, but that's how it is for me).

This being said, I have some homework if you're really bored... Numerical Analysis, Enconomics, Sociology, your choice. You could even practice your french while you're at it!

                    Narcissus,
Actually my Xeon box takes an average of 15 hours now--up from 3.5 hrs!
I'll trade ya! I'll take numerical analysis and Ecomic ad you can run our families bussines-where i am currently working on a 42 page market analysis/plan that's due next wednesday and I just found time to get started Have fun with your homework- I miss those days.

15 hours?!? Outch! That must really hurt... I guess you could run Genome@Home and get 50+ WUs on the same amount of time, but it's your choice! (Yet another shameless plug )

Yeah yeah, I know, but I miss (the equivalent of) high school. At least I had my nights and weekends . Oh well, greater things have yet to come I guess...

                        Guru

How many WU's have you done to base that 10hrs/Wu time on?
10hrs is definatley not right for a 1Ghz

                            Well, my friend's 1GHz TBird crunches WUs in 6:00 if it's a high-angle and about 7:00 if it's low-angle.
