  • WTF is this?

    Two of computers on my client's office LAN can't get on the Internet anymore and had trouble seeing other workstations on the LAN. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with them. While poking around I found these in win98 system directory with System configuration Utility:

    dntc.exe
    dntc.ini

    and in the startup list:

    bymer.scanner
    dntc.exe

    content of the .ini file:

    dntc.net

    [parameter]
    id=bymer@ukrpost.net

    [misc]
    project-priority=OGR, RC5, CSC, DES

    [rc5]
    fetch-workunit-threshold=64
    randomprefix=29

    [ogr]
    fetch-workunit-threshold=16

    [triggers]
    restart-on-config-file-change=yes

    Its obviously stealth distributed computing stuff that somehow got installed with some program downloaded from internet or from somewhere without knowledgment of the users of both workstations. No way the users of these computers could've installed the programs themselves, because one kept asking me "How in the world you stuff 256 sheeps into this computer". and the other one thinks every computer ought to run AOL as well as the Pink iMac she owns.

    I dont know if this shit is causing the workstations not recognizing the network but the other four workstations that are working have no such files. I reinstalled Win98 to replace the system files and everything working right again. Did anyone encouter this?

    You are right about the stealth distributed program...

    Strange thing is... if that's the real e-mail address of the person (which it may be if he's a lame unthinking person) and it was found on your business's computer... I think you can tell where I am going with this...

    I leave it up to you to have some fun with it...

      That is a result of a Trojan which has secretly installed RC5 onto those PC's ,it shouldn't hurt your network at all though.

      This has been talked about fairly extensively on the Anandtech DC forums ,if you do a search for it ( http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=39 ),you should be able to find some archived threads about it.

      BTW don't blame RC5/dnet for this ,this is down to 1 lowlife who thought he could get a big stats boost:|
