Welcome Neal, nice to have you here.

The problem with our team is that many are switching over to Distributed Folding, we are much more competitive in that dicipline.

Yes, but it's the negative points I'm looking at. At the moment I only have 3 PCs crunching anyway, but only 1 of these I can ensure it can be online to update.

Unless you or anyone has a solution to that problem, I can't run DF. As soon as I read about the updating being required I ignored all DF talk from then on

I'm happy letting G@H have my cycles, but I'm in no rush to create extra cycles for distributed projects at the moment - at least until we have something better than the current 3 we run.

You dont have to update right away and at the moment it's ~1month between updates!
According to the latest official figures, 43% of all statistics are totally worthless...

How long do we get to update? Considering it's a month between their updates, and that I update the other machines on something just better than monthly, I think it's safe to assume that I will loose crunching time because of this.

I know you want me on DF, but we can't just ignore all of its negative points!

            Hi Novdid

Whats 'Distributed Folding', not heard of that to be honest? Sorry to be a dumb ass

              No need to be sorry!

This is their site. Check it out and you'll find out what it's all about. If you ask me it has a lot more meaning to it than seti.

                Thanks Novdid

I have added the home page to my fav's. Think i might start that once Seti@Home1 finishes.

Hi Neal, if you want more DF info then there's been plenty posted on the forums here too

As for Seti, you ever used our site? (www.distributedatmurc.co.uk) Just curious what a new MURCer thinks of it.

And watch out, there's some scary MURCers in Leicester

If you are running NT4, 2K or XP it is really easy to set up the text client as a service. You can then set it to autoupdate. No negative points there.

Well, to get autoupdate to work, you'll need a working internet-connection...

Indeed Rattledagger. FOR THE 5TH TIME

I have 2 networks, one is online most of the time (albeit that 'network' is down to 1 PC!), and the other is online about twice a month, or less. I can't use autoupdate on these machines, and even if I did, it would mean best case no lost days, but worst case 3 weeks lost CPU time. It's not a solution. That last dump I made I couldn't even upload all the units in 40 minutes. There were about 130 Genome units to upload from 2 machines - does that tell you how long these go between updates?

So, is it safe to assume I can't run DF without lost cycles on these PCs?

No, for everyone else - you seem to be the only who gets it!

No I "got" it I was just pointing out that you do not have to be online to crunch df neither do you have to update directly when there is a update available! But if you lonly check the comps every other week I'm affraid df is not the best option for you!
