  • Seti for BOINC "officially active"

    June 22, 2004
Welcome to the new SETI@home! The project is now officially active. We've reset the project by deleting all results and workunits, and setting all credits (user, team, host) to zero.

    Nice simplistic interface.
Can it run as a service? That is the only thing that I would want so I could put it on more machines as it would be absolutely out of the way from a generic users perspective.

    Edit:
Seems to take 9 to 10 hours for a unit on my my machine below.

The URL of this project is http://setiathome.berkeley.edu. If you joined using a different URL, please detach and attach to this URL.

Version 3.19 of the BOINC core client for Windows is released. Please upgrade.

As for running as service, if you looks closely there's 2 executables in your boinc-directory. boinc_cli.exe that is the command-line-version and boinc_gui.exe that is the gui linked till from the shortcut.

To install as service, boinc_cli.exe -install
and depending on your OS it's just to start it or reboot. Note, on some XP-versions you'll most likely have to change the account it's running as... "system" is a good working account.

As for speed, this is comparable to "classic" v3.08, or in other words roughtly 10% slower than v3.03. For Berkeley more effective wu-distribution by BOINC will say over 100% more wu is crunched in the same amount of time.

Just a couple quick questions left. How does one remove the service if necessary? Also, does one always have to run the non-service version long enough to set up the password and such and then put it in service mode.

It has not slowed my system at all and it automatically removes the startup shortcut when installing as a service.

If you runs boinc_cli /? you get all the startup-choises.
boinc_cli -uninstall is to remove the service...

Attacking projects and the like is possible from boinc_cli, but for most it's easiest to use the gui for setup.
Later a separate gui will talk to the cli and you can do the configuring in this, but the gui isn't finnished yet...

Excellent. A lot of thought has certainly been put into this.

              Transition to BOINC

We have released a new version of SETI@home based on BOINC, a general-purpose platform for distributed computing projects. We encourage you to switch to the new SETI@home. If you have problems with the new version, you can uninstall it and reinstall the old 'Classic' version of SETI@home. The schedule is:

On 14 May 2004 we made a 'snapshot' of SETI@home Classic user information (accounts, teams, profiles) and used it to initialize the new SETI@home database.
On June 22 2004 we made SETI@home/BOINC available for general use. There will be a 'transition period' during which you can run either SETI@home Classic or SETI@home/BOINC. During this transition period, SETI@home Classic accounts and team changes can be made, but they will not be carried over.
Once SETI@home/BOINC is running smoothly and versions are available for most platforms, we will turn off the data server for SETI@home Classic. At this point you will need to switch to SETI@home/BOINC.

              The rest is at http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/sah/transition.php

Might rejoin Seti@home now. Dunno if it matters cos I've been out of the loop for so long, but the old 'Matrox Users' group is still there.
