BTW, is there any way to verify the speed of a computer? Or can that only be done by seeing when it uploads trickles?

You already sent 5 trickles or so today... On average, I manage 3 a day with my P4, and probabely something similar with my Xeon (it doesn't run at night)

Ah well, it was fun while it lasted...

She *can* be rather competitive, which is something I did not know about her before.

Well, the stats do seem to keep track of the correct credits of the users, so it can give us an idea. Too bad I have to work offline, as it does mess up my 'recent credit average'.

Aargh, my computer just crashed: suddenly, it just rebooted without warning...

I suspect it overheated : what I hadn't noticed is that the sun was shining directly on the side of the case (the side where the mainboard is attached).
I've now rebooted, and everything seems to work (CPU is now at 61°C, which is normal for this system).

Hope it has not lost you too many cycles, I think it saves every 144 timesstep or so (I read something about 144 timeslices, may be completely irrelevant for this).

Anyway, it's all for the team I guess, but the fact that team stats are bogus atm, and have been for some time, make this more of a competition between VJ and me solely.

ROFLMAO, indeed, so have I, wondering whether it'd be cheaper Euro/trickle wise to have two "slow" dual xeons or one "fast duallie, or opterons, or simply fast P4-Extremes (memeory bandwidth etc. Whether I should set up a network at home (finally) etc.

Xmas will still be cheaper than actually buying those monsters though.

Well, I had this upgrade path in my mind... I currently have a great serverboard (onboard SCSI, ...) and dual Xeon 2.4 GHz.

My idea at the time of purchase was to upgrade to Xeon 3.2 GHz when they would have dropped in price, buy a more entry level dual Xeon board (i.e. no SCSI, less PCI-X, ...), move my current CPUs to the entry level board, and put the new ones on my current board.
In theory, this upgrade-path seems fine, but in practise, I have encountered some problems:[list=1][*]Xeon prices (for the 533 FSB variant) haven't dropped much... (I would have thought after 2 years they'd have come down, but the 2.4 GHz I have is still at about the same price , the 3.06 GHz with 512 KB cache still costs €350 (ok, it is a bit less than 2 years ago), I won't even mention the model with 1 MB cache... )[*]Intel released the 800 FSB variant, which is not compatible with my mainboard (buying a 533 mainboard now gives the impression of buying old technology)[/list=1]
So while this upgrade path would set me back about €1000 (no case, PSU or memory) I guess upgrading is not for tomorrow.

edit: I just checked: a Xeon 3.0, FSB 800, 1 MB cache costs about the same as a Xeon 3.066, FSB 533, 512 KB cache...

Which CPU does it have?

Yesterday I tried to see if I'd get a performance hit by running 3 units in parallel (there was a huge drop in speed when running 4 units). My first estimates seem to say there is no disadvantage (it could have been caused by a memory bottleneck).
However, as I can only see the sec/TS when I upload, I've set it back to 2 units; I'll try 3 units next week...

With 4 units, I got 7.5 sec/TS (for every unit!).

It's a P4-2.4Ghz, 533 Fsb. I do think it's mainly the memory that's holding the Athlon 3000+s back, as they are hardly faster then my 2000+ is. So yeah, it *might* just be that 3 would do the trick for you.

On a side note, we're #58 now (WOW!), but our RAC is #48 only, appearing to show that we won't be able to get much higher then currently.

Of course, RAC is borked, was before the stat probs occured. After the weekend, I'll do my own analysis and give a new prediction.

We _DO_ need more power.
