System Lockup with user profiles

Has anyone else had a problem with their system locking up on a PC with more than one user profile set up? I get to the user/password dialog but then if the default profile (and hence the display of the user/password box) is not set to 640x480 and 16 colours then progress past the Windows Login dialog screen is impossible. Workaround is to boot in safe mode and change the default user profile but it is very annoying.
Any ideas anyone?

I have been having a similar problem with my Matrox Mystique. I have just installed Windows 98 Release 2, and setup profiles. Beforehand, Outlook Express worked fine, now, it will only run in 16 Colours, at 640x480.
