To disable unwanted startup items, the safest say in w98 is in the system configuration utility within system information. The less running, the better.

Paul, disabling pdesk at start-up is not the same thing as disabling pdesk. The pdesk kernel (in version 5.41, have not noticed it with earlier drivers) will initialize as soon as you run any directx or 3d apps, regardless of if it runs at start up. On some systems, once it initializes, it stays in memory and eats a large amount of CPU time, unless you disable it.

As a matter of course, I always try NOT to install drivers using the setup programs due to the fact that they often install extra crap thats not strictly necessary.

For example, I have a logitech 3-buttin PS/2 mouse, but i never use mouseware. I find telling win98 that im using the above mouse will enable all of its functions successfully.

Likewise with the G400, I unzip the driver file and then update to the new driver using the "update driver" function in the device manager, this way all I install is the basic matrox drivers.

When I do have to use the setup program (like with the sblive) i edit the setup.inf or whatever needed and comment out all the lines that install all the extra crap such as the launcher etc..

I prefer my machine to be lean and mean and not bloated up by all the extras that i don't need.

          just to let you know...

          i installed the 4.34.015
drivers for my NT 4.0 Server and got
mgabg eating 30% of cpu power
on my celeron 300A@450. I got
          for example winamp stuttering when
          playing audio cds...

so i reinstalled and disabled the quickdesk - (or whatever the thing is) that puts the display icon in the toolbar
(at the bottom of the screen)...
after that i get cpu idling about 99%
when nothing (except some minor services) is running...

          best regards...

          Smo

Anid - Thanks for the info, I've sometimes wondered why pdesk is in the task manager.
I will set resource meter @ startup and see what effect pdesk does after a 3d game

I just did a complete re-install of my system, and have no CPU resource problems.

I don't have a scrolling type mouse though.

Here's the link to how I reinstalled: http://forums.murc.ws/ubb/Forum7/HTML/000286.html

              Just FYI.
