  • Mystique G200 & iiyama A901HT

    Hi,

I just bought a new monitor (iiyama A901HT) which supports frequencies up to 107 Hz @ 1280x1024.

Running my Mystique G200 @ 32bit color, standard I can only get the frequency up to 75 Hz. But if I "Adjust the display mode" using the "Monitor Settings" on the Mystique Property Page, I can get the frequency up to 84 Hz.

My question: can it have *any* negative consequences of using a higher-than-standard frequency? I mean, for my monitor of for my g200 card. The screen looked fine @ 84 Hz.

    Thanks!

    Sincerely yours,

Running at a non-standard refresh rate is not a problem. However, if you drive your monitor near (or even beyond) its rated limits, you risk considerably shortening the monitor's life. You may also notice that as you get closer and closer to the monitor's rated limits, the image gets blurrier and blurrier.

Often, it boils down to a trade-off between flicker and blur. For example, my 17" MAG Innovision MXP17F is rated to go up to 1600x1200@60Hz, which, as you might imagine, is somewhat flickery. However, the monitor is actually able to go as high as 1600x1200@65Hz, albeit with some blurriness.

Believe it or not, my monitor will actually go all the way to 2048x1536 -- but only at 52Hz. In that mode, the monitor is both dizzyingly flickery and migraine-inducingly blurry.

Note that I have tried driving my monitor beyond its rated limits just as an experiment, because I like to tinker. I would not recommend doing it yourself unless you're willing to possibly blow up the monitor, and probably void the warranty.
