My screen saver locks-up and won't respond without doing the "three fingered salute", and selecting "kill task". This is after installing 550.010. The computer works fine again until the screen saver kicks in. Also, on 3d pipes, with multiple pipes enabled, it flickers horribly. Any suggestions?

You can also try turning off all power management options in the Control Panel. If it still locks up, uncheck rundll32 in the System Configuration Utility.
In my office, we started having unexplained lockups and crashes on various machines after power management was turned on. Some machines became very unstable, others only occasionally so. After regional dates were set to 4 chars as part of our final Y2k prep, two machines began spontaneously rebooting themselves. I finally discovered that the reboot occurred when the screen saver would normally kick in. Initially, we turned off the screen savers to solve the problem, but now that we've eliminated power management, the screen savers work just fine and the crashes/reboots have stopped.
Windows power management also made my Athlon 500 wildly unstable. Since I turned off everything related to power management, it's been rock solid.

If you're running Win98 SE then there's a whole host of Power management problems. Use the Windows update tool to download the Power management patches - or follow the previous advice and totally switch it off (this is the best option !)Warning: Sigs may seriously damage your health...
