  • Slow refresh above 1024x768

I have the Matrox G400 DH 32MB card with a recently purchased Sony 19" CPD-420GS monitor.

I have been running my desktop at 1024x768 in 32 bit color depth because that is all my old monitor could display. Now that I have a new monitor, I would like to run my desktop at 1280x1024 with 32 or 24 bit color depth.

The Problem: When I step up the resolution above 1024x768 the screen redraws incredibly slow. Example, when I click and drag a window on the desktop, you can actually see the window redrawn (maybe 2-5 redraws per second). At resolutions of 1024x768 or lower at any color depth the screen redraws so fast that it looks quite fluid (as you would expect from any decent vid card). I have tried 32, 24 and 16 color depths at 1280x1024 with same results.

The monitor is set to 85Hz refresh rate. The monitor is capable of displaying 1280 x 1024 @ 60/75/85Hz VESA, and a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz. The correct monitor is recognized and loaded in the monitor tab. Gaming performance is unaffected by resolution, though I do not play games about 1024x768. Dual head is disabled.

I am using the newest 5.52.015 drivers on Win98SE. The 5.5 beta drives did the same thing. I also make to use the matrox uninstaller to update the drivers.

Even with my ATI 8MB card on my puter @ work, I can use 1280x1024 @ 32bit color depth with no problems. So my the G400 with a very nice Sony monitor should not have problems with those resolutions.

Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I will sometimes get this IF I have a large wallpaper "stretched" to fit my desktop.
When centering or tiling the wallpaper, I don't get it at all....
