  • Virtual Desktop to come back if.....?

I recently heard that Microsoft will remove dual monitor support from either Windows 2000 or XP or both. I can't recall exactly what the article said.

If this happens, will Matrox PUT BACK the necessary code for us to run Virtual Desktop? I honestly don't see why they wouldn't. After all, plenty of us have complained about its absence.

Also, has anyone ever figured out what files are required or what registry hacks are necessary to use the latest drivers yet enable Virtual Desktop? I am wondering if it is a particular *.dll or other file that we can use from older drivers.

All I can say is that I can neither afford another monitor or fit one on my desk and so the ONLY acceptable solution is for me to use my Matrox G200 and 4.26 drivers (from 1998!). The funny thing is that I am running Windows 98 and I have never had a conflict with these older drivers with the so-called conflicting Vitrual Desktop! So whatever Microsoft has said and Matrox buckled under, does not affect me and I would love to see this functionality added back to the Matrox unified drivers.

And if anyone knows how to enable Virtual Desktop under newer drivers, I'd sure like to know.

Currently I am running all up to date software, including DirectX7 and there are no conflicts but I would like to run the G200 with updated drivers, only keep Virtual Desktop since I chose Matrox products for that feature and I'd also like to note that I paid for that functionality....!

Virtual desktops (as in Matrox MultiDesk) is working in under Windows 2000 in the 5.71 beta driver package. I am really liking it.

Re: Virtual Desktop to come back if....?

      HI,

I suppose the MultiDesk is kind of cool, but I didn't think it was like the "virtual desktop", rather it was more like Unix desktops where you have multiple separate desktops you can switch between as opposed to scroll over...

What I want back is the ability to define a larger desktop area yet still maintain a particular viewport. So if my screen size is 1024x768, I can define a virtual desktop that's 2048x768 and I can place two Word documents or Netscape windows side by side and simply scroll between them merely by sliding the mouse left and right.

It's like having two monitors without having to pay for and provide space for another one.

There are plenty of advantages to the Matrox virtual desktop which Matrox seems to have forgotten.

I recently bought an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon and have resorted to shareware solutions for a virtual desktop. Matrox has lost me as a customer.

      Thanks for the information though!
