Greebe not to worry, i have a bit of a sadistic/masochistic streak in me already. I think its necessary when one undertakes the path of pushing the hardware of a system beyond spec...
    Cheers.

Well, I think I've decided on a solution. Thanks for your input Cancer, but see how you like this idea. I'm going to build a box out of MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) that fits into a prebuilt hole in the wall. The inside of this box will allow for proper air flow (via duct holes in the sides(one at the top and one at the bottom)), but the front of the box will narrow to about a 1/2" wider than the face plate of my computer. Around this opening, I will glue 1/2 neoprene rubber. When I slide my computer case into the box, the neoprene should seal just around the edges of my computer case right around the face plate. That way, i'll still have access to the the drives, but other than that, the entire computer will look as though it's built right into the wall. Huh, huh, what do guys think about that??

      P.S. I think I'm getting worse!!!!!

Wait a minute!!!! Brain storm here!! Who needs a computer case at all!!! I mean as long as the frame work is there to hold stuff in place, i don't need to see the computer at all. Since I'm building the walls, why don't I just do what Cancer said with one little exception. I can just build the bays into the wall!!!! When you look at the wall, there will be a couple of drives, some leds, and a power and reset button. The only problem is, what if i decide to add another drive. I guess I'll just have to add a couple bays with face plates for future upgrades.

Holy crap, just read that back and I can't believe what i'm talking about!!!! I mean for gods sakes I'm probably going to have to sell this place one day!!!!

I need some sleep, yeah, some sleep should make everything better.

          Well Brett I shouldn't really be encouraging you in this endeavour but is sounds good in theory. You may encounter some problems;
          • With the cables coming from the back of the case.
          • What if you don't like the position of your desk, its a little difficult to move it very far from your 'in built PC'.
          • Being a rampant tweaker such as your self, you'll be constantly drooling over new hardware that comes on the market. Having the PC stuck in the wall is going to be a little difficult to add & replace parts to your system.
          • SANITY MUST PEVAIL PEOPLE! Surely there must be more to life than just pushing the envelope with hardware tweaks? thinking... thinking... thinking... I give up. The first three points were good weren't they?

          Cheers.

Well, all I really needed was a little sleep. I'm much better now.

I've given a little thought to my project, and the grown-up in me finally kicked in and slapped me square in the face. I've decided to scrap the whole idea! The idea itself would probably work very well, the problem is with the application. Like Cancer said, short of having a "quick release case" where all of the cables in the rear stay in some sort of mounting bracket so that I can pull the computer out of the wall, it's just too much of a pain. Another thing, is that the hole for the computer would have to be about 3' off the ground so that it's not under my desk and out of reach. Speaking about out of reach, every time I wanted to access the disk drives, I would have to stand up and reach over my 3' wide desk. It's just not practical.

P.S. I finaly understand how this support group works. Everyone helps to push each other closer to the brink of insanity, snatching them back just before they go over!

I'll go as far as to say I seriously thought about a Dual PIII 800 with an OR840 intel board with dual channel DRDRAM to get around the latencies. Do I need it? no, Do I really even want it? No. But since Matrox is putting out anything of use to me til probably the end of the year (and I can't wait that long) I figured I should get something. So I opted instead for a 3DCool.Com Toronado 1000 case, Alpha for the FC-PGU coppermine I got and one of those groovie copper shim's so the Alpha stays flat against the processor core. I'm even thinking of switching out my 18.2GB Cheetaz for 36GB Quantum Ultra160 drives.

How about a slide-out rack ala audio racks? that way, you can still access everything inside your 'wall computer'.

As for the purpose of this group, I think it's more to push others over the edge to feel better about your own pathetic existence...

BTW, my old 2G hard drive finally died - I think I need to get a new fast, big one to replace it. Do I really need to 20G hard drives? Maybe if I want to install W2k or something.

Is there any reason to have Win2k if you don't need it? What can you do with it you can't do with 98SE?

Oh wait, this probably isn't helping anyone, is it?

Yes Brett, sleep deprivation does funny things to ones mind... hehe whoha ha... giggle, burp. And very bad for the chronic overclocker in us all.
YoKoMo I’m confused (not unlike everyone here) are you reaching out for help or are you making fun of us sorry individuals?
Ahartman big fast hard drives are fun because you don’t have to clean em’ as much. I love my big fast HD, I keep filling it with shit and it comes back for more. I haven’t defragged for months, partly due to the fact 28.5Gs takes several hours to complete. That’s time better spent crunching WUs. My HD has four 4k partions, one for Windows (nice a small so windows doesn’t make an attempt to take over/infect the rest of my HD with its vileness) and three other equally sized partions (one for games, one for zips and the other…I have no idea what I do with that one, I think its empty)
Windows2k has lots of cool stuff but that’s not the point is it. Windows is a big piece of bloatware that consumes huge chunks of resources to tempt our poor susceptible minds that our system is running too slow and that we must spend enormous wads of cash to feed this hungry monster. I think it’s a huge big conspiracy between M$ and hardware manufactures like Intel. M$ agrees to produce ravenous beasts and Intel makes hardware just powerful enough to run until of course a revised OS comes out and the process starts all over again. Stand fast my friends and resist the urge for Bill Gates is a horned and hoofed beast and under that bowl haircut of his is the number of the beast.
Excuse me while I get a mop and clean up the mess on my keyboard.
                  Cheers.
