  • So, who's going to go out and buy WindowsMe...

...do a clean install, and then do everything in your power to make it look as much like Windows 95 as possible?

I certainly did this with Windows 98. I can't see things changing much.

No - this WinME is just the win2k front end on a win98 platform... oh, and the no DOS support thing. I certainly wont buy it, but I'll probably end up 'acquiring' it.

Pay...buy...purchase...huh? What do these terms mean?

WinME is just GUI update to Win98 with some bug fixes and few new gadgets. Nothing I would spend any money on. If it was something revolutionary I might. But when was the last time M$ did anything but copy and paste other peoples ideas?

I don't use MS's shell so I couldn't be bothered with a new one, getting rid of more 16 bit is always good though and I'm sure it will become a requirement in terms of support so you'll probably have to get it. As usual.

Maybe I´ll regret what I am saying now, but I won´t even "aquire" it. Windows 9x? Just say NO

Not I. w95 running real lean (i.e., no IE) does all right for me.

I wonder what makes people think that new version of Windows is always just the same old core with improvements in GUI? This has been going on since the days of Windows 1.0 so my question is, how many here thinks that WinME will contain code from original Windows 1.0?
Yet every time someone seems to know nothing has changed..

It's not like removing DOS means leaving out some DOS.EXE from the installation CAB.

You can read what's new in WinMe <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsMe/">here</a>. I would list UPnP as one very exciting feature, and it's completely new technology.

im with Merchant2112, of the 4 operating systems that are on my system, i would have to say that windows 98 is my least favorite.
Unfortunately most of the programs i enjoy need windows 98 to work (Personal cobol (dont ask) and certain games come to mind).
And then the order of valid reasonning for bieng on my system goes as follows (from good reason, to not much of a reason)
                    Windows 2000
                    Linux Mandrake 7.0
(also have good reason for it)
finally BeOS 5 (hoping that it will become more compatible with my computer equipment shortly in the future)

                    this ='s my 0.02$ worth

Recently I read on the register that in Windows ME there still is lots of legacy code, but MS just has hidden it, so you won't notice it being there, unless you do a thorough search for it.

Although The Register always posts some false stories, lots of their stories are at least in some degree right.

Yes, it would be quite extraordinary if something The Register reported could be backed up with solid proof, like "that GIZMO.SYS is exactly the same as with Windows 2.0". Now it's only convinient that it can't be checked..
Somehow people tend to believe all the rumours about Microsoft. Like the other day my collegue came to me with the fact that WinMe has no netwoking what so ever. I have no idea where he got the idea from (probably IRC, the useless distributed database of false knowledge) but he was so convinced it was true and never even bothered to check it out.
I hope you get my point that's so cleverly hidden somewhere there..

As a matter of fact, I don't have to buy, purchase or otherwise "acquire" either Win2k or WinME as it will be supplied to me, by me new boss

Since I do use DOS for some utilities, like a real good MOD/XM-player&editor, I hope WinME will have some DOS.EXE in a CAB file.

                          Nice abbreviation... WinME... WinMe

Where do we enter to win it, Paul?

How much 16 bit is in there can probably be seen using System Information under 16 bit modules. Well what gets loaded at any rate.
