  • Odd file conversions

Does anyone know of some software that will let me convert real audio files (of various types, needs real player 7) into mp3's?

Or is it a case of finding software that'll convert them into .wavs and taking it from there?

I've got about six hours of a radio show that i managed to download, and I want to have them on a CD to listen to on my shiny new CD mp3 player (mmmmmm).

I'm not going to be very useful here...

Yes, what you want to do can be done, and there's software written to do it.

What you might need to do (if you can't find software to do direct .ra->.mp3 conversion) is play the .ra files, and capture the audio from the soundcard (usually into a .wav), then compress.

I hope somebody else here has more useful information than I do.

Which handily leads me on to my other little question. How the heck do I capture the output of my soundcard at any quality whatsoever???

Everytime I have tried (ok, I"ve tried to grab snatches from the matrix DVD) I've got a .wav that sounds like the actors are at the bottom of a fish tank and the mic was in the pump.

Is it just that I need to get a decent .wav recording suite, or is there a different settign in recording set up on my sound card (MX300)?

I'll make sure tonight that my machine isn't just capturing audio at 5kbs or something stoopid like that.

There was some shareware called something like Streambox ripper which did just this, converted ra into more useful formats. Real was quick to sue them at once for their evil deeds so you might have to find an older version.

There is also a prog called Ra2Wav. Not exactly sure where you can get your hands on it at the moment, but it's certainly out there.

          Good luck,

And for pulling sound from your sound card, try to find software that does "audio extraction".
