The trouble with a "regular" faq, as Pace suggests, is that no-one reads it...
You'll have to make a huge, flashing, fluor-coloured faq-button, and even then it's not sure that everyone sees it.
This faq-forum is a great idea imho, because everyone who goes to the forums summary-page, sees the faq-forum inmediately.

Maybe Ant could include a link to the FAQ archive when he sends out the registration acknowledgment E-Mail.

Hmmmaybe, but Ant will have to rummage in the gooey Perl-code this forum is made of.
Our board is fully customized, with a special layout, faq, alternative search and such.
It takes us a day (or even two) to customize the board to our layout and have it stable enough for the 6000 users (80% of that number however are lurkers or people who post a question and never return).
