If you want to go check out the link that Jorden posted, I just posted a response. I think we can do it, we just need some bots to help us out. Shouldn't be a major issue, just need to code the bots (or else just use something prepackaged, like Eggdrop or whatever).

As long as it isn't on TalkCity with all their dumb commercials and their dumb "we use only TC-Pirch98" standards
It really kills you to chat while all these flashing and funking commercials are on every side of your screen

Btw, yes, there is a way around that. For those chatters on TC using TC-Pirch98: Just go to your fave chatroom and rightclick in the window. Then click Use on Top and enlarge your window... gone are those commercials
The downside is: they are still being downloaded every 30 seconds taking up your bandwidth

I was thinking more along the lines of a straightforward MIRC room, either on EFNet or the like, or on a private server (like anyone would volunteer their machine for that, hehe!).

Actually, I'd volunteer except that come next week I'll be on a one-way cable modem, which limits my upstream to 28.8k (urk)!

Some time back our hosts GA said they were setting up a IRC server for the network, never heard any more of it but I'll ask.

I helped write an IRC bot once... it works(ish) and runs from the command line on Win9x, or preferably NT. We intended to write a Linux port, but just getting it to work at all was hard enough

Anyway, you could use it if you could find somewhere to host it...

Otherwise, I might be able to get an eggdrop or 2 from some of the other channels I used.

Quick update - the bot I helped write is currently in a broken state (it crashes on connecting to a server now ), but I have managed to acquire an eggdrop and somewhere to host it.

Let me know what network (EFnet pls!!) and channel we want it on

Well,I have to say NO to EFnet...I WOULD NEVER USE IT! (mainly because for some reason my IP's been banned...explain that, i have never actually GOT on to EFnet, so how could they ban me?...i know, it has to do with the first 2 numbers in the IP,but still)
I have tried using Identd to connect to it, but for the life of me i cant figure out how it works!

Its more likely that you aren't authorised to use the EFnet server you choose. Here in the UK I can't use any of the US servers. irc.homelien.no is on EFnet, doesnt require Identd (last time I checked), and seems to have most IPs authorised. It should be ok for any1 in Europe.
I use Efnet.demon.co.uk when I can (depends on ISP) cos its a bit less laggy.

[EDIT] I just asked an IRC op on EFnet and there are no entire ISP G-lines (global bans). There do exists lots of K-lines (irc server specific bans)

Using Pirch98, I got onto Efnet using channel irc02,irc.aol.com:6667, did the /join #murc from the commandbar and was automatically alone and ops in the room.

I think something went wrong on the bot, maybe it butchered itself

I guess that there is a netsplit in progress (where a server or group of servers lose connection to the others) and either my server (efnet.demon.co.uk) the bots server (irc.mcs.net) or your server have split.

Works for me. Why not try MIRC? Or a different server. I got in just fine on concentric.
