I'm not sure irc.aol.com is on EFnet actually... I have the feeling it got delinked (what happens when an IRC server gets removed from the network). It may now be on IRCnet or something else...

Any chance of a Murcer chat room?

I am usually pretty good at figuring out programs, but I can't seem to connect using mIRC! Can one of you experienced users please give us mIRC newbies a "step by step" through the process of getting connected? Also, would it be possible to use ICQ for the chat room? I know that it is a lot easier, and I am pretty sure that most people already have it.

Hey Raptor & Butcher - I logged out to go to work and now it says #g400 is invite only! What gives?

Ok, I've setup #murc on Efnet. It currently has a lone eggdrop called G400, myself and _Butcher_ (the bot owner) on the chan.
Feel free to pop along and see us
If your new to irc get mIRC
Choose an IRC server near to you from the list (make sure its an EFnet server!!) and connect.
When the dialog box pops up asking which channel to join, type #murc. Hit ok (or join.. I forget what the button is labelled) and your there.
If the channel is completely empty, then you've got the wrong IRC network, or something else bad has happened.
If you can't connect to the first server you try (closing link appears in the window) then try some more - you are bound to get on somewhere...
Edit - my HTML sucks...

Kindness - there are some reasonable instructions on setting up mIRC here
The only changes I would make are in Step 3. Where it says real name and email addr put something else instead
And where it says 'You will have to select a local or nearby server' make sure you choose one on EFnet. (Random EFnet server might work, but I think its bad idea)
I would give my own instructions, but I can't use mIRC from work (where I am now) and I haven't really used the recent versions enough to just remember all the boxes

Thanks, Raptor! I finally figured it out and was able to connect. This program is OK I guess but I like the way ICQ looks and feels, better. Is it a dumb thing to bring up a second time? (there is probably a reason you can't use it, I just don't know what it is.) Is ICQ a BAD idea?

The problem with ICQ is, while it does support a chat room type thing.... it's really unreliable when using it. I've had all sorts of problems, mainly some people not getting all the messages off others. ICQ works fine for instant messaging, but for actual multi-user chat it leaves a lot to be desired.

Okay, just tested a couple of other connections on the same Efnet, and in all I sat alone in the room, as ops. That must be a very persistent server split then.
So, if I were to chat in this room I specifically have to download and install mIRC? That goes a bit far, me thinks. The only difference between mIRC and Pirch is the layout and visuals of the menu. In the background it's about the exact program running.
So, Efnet refuses to either connect, on one of the Efnet-sub-channels I am banned, 15 others don't exist at this moment and the ones that do work, give me an empty room and ops. Great !!
I'll chat in my own fave rooms if you guys don't mind. Have fun with the chat room here. I've just given up

No you don't have to use mIRC... Pirch should work just fine, I'm using IRCII. If you want to give it another try anytime I suggest irc.homelien.no as your server. It should let you on, I'll change to it now so you will definately be able to see me
You said you were using Pirch98. I guess that your server list is somewhat out of date (2 years prhaps). That would explain the non-existent servers and ones that are no longer connected to the network.

heh, EFnet has been really bad these last couple of days... on friday I saw at least 10 major server splits, normally if you get 1 major split it's unusual (some of the minor servers split a lot but they're normally on the edge of the net for that very reason).
If you need a good server try these:
irc.telia.se, irc.homelien.no, efnet.demon.co.uk / Europe
irc.ais.net (AKA concentric), irc.frontiernet.net, irc.mcs.net / US.
The bot sits on irc.mcs.net, Raptor prefers homelien.
