"Maybe you should wonder more about why your country DOESN'T feel the pride that Americans feel."

That's a valid point, in fact I thought that was the one I was making, of course Candians generally don't go in for feeling proud of the US. I think one sports commentator summed it up well when the Blue Jays were playing in the world series, what exactly is there to be nationalistic about when all the players come from the Dominican Republic?

I just wonder if the billions of Chineese really love the Chineese army and worship communism and it's leaders spontaneously.

I don't know. My next door neighbors are Chinese (and the people down the street are Vietnamese). I'll go ask them.

        They said no.

Personally, I have a lot of Canadian pride, and I don't need nationalism rammed down my throat to feel that way, like you poor yankees do.

The good news is that this is being passed onto a new generation. My neighbors have these on tape and their 2 year old daughter watches them all the time. And since we live in Japan and his wife teaches English her students watch them as part of their Enlish lesson. Nothing funnier than seeing a group of Japanese girls that can barely speak English singing "conjunction, Junction"

FYI, those cartoons were paid for by Good Old Uncle Sugar. For a long time, the US government paid for spots of Public Service Announcements that were for the greater good of the country. Yes, there is a reason why they were all wearing the stars and stripes. Yes, they were there to get funded by the US government. Does it make me sick? Yes, in a way it does, but in a way it doesn't. It makes me sick that the US government would puppet string information in that manner, but it doesn't make me sick to be proud of being an American Citizen at all. Now, just think about all those history books you read in school, do you actually believe they were accurate, when the US government went through and read them and only approved ones it deemed "proper"? This activity has been pretty much stopped, but it makes one wonder what else is done to influence citizens of our country.

Well I will tell you one thing. The US may not be perfect but I can't think of another place I would rather live. And if the cost of that is to watch alittle flag waving every now and then, then so be it. Even with all of her faults I am still proud to be an American.

Seems to me that this thread is just that American Bullshit attitude again. Patting themselves on the back. I love my country and I think for the most part people around the world feel the same about there country. We're just not so attacked that we need to tell everybody.
Personally, I disagree with most people talking bad about Americans. I think they are very hospitable people and polite. But when the start with the attitude, if you just nudge them a little bit, the "I'm better than everybody else" attitude rises to the surface.

As proof, watch what happens when I press submit.

When I think of Canada, I think of federal politics, federal - provincial relations in paticular, and there is nothing there to get worked up over, at least in a positive direction. When your region is always fighting with the entity you associate with being "Canada" it's kind of hard for strong feelings of patriotism to emerge, it's like cheering for the opposing team. In fact regionalism is a constant threat to break up the country, for one region in paticular it has become nationalism in it's own right.

Oh, when I think of the US, I think of Jerry Springer, O. J. Simpson, and Bill Clinton.

Wow - not what I expected when I first started this topic.

I intended this to be a place for people to reminice (sp?) about something positive about their childhood. I have never come across anyone who thought negatively about the Schoolhouse Rock series.

Somehow this turned into a discussion about nationalism, which isn't all bad...

It always amazes me when people get down on Americans because of our 'flag waving'.

I do wonder why this sense of pride doesn't exist in many other countries. Rather than try to figure out why we're so proud of our country and belittle us for it, you should be spending your time trying to figure out what it is about your country that doesn't have you doing the same thing.

As for the additional list of positive things to come out of Canada, I can't believe no one mentioned Barenaked Ladies.

Joel, I laughed out loud at your "who you callin' a yankee" comment.

Strahd, where is Barovia? I could look it up but I'm far too lazy...

Canadians aren't all proud of the barenaked ladies.

Barovia is a realm within Ravenloft and Strahd is actually the Lord of the domain.

I don't mind flag waving. Nothing like being patriotic. I feel I am. It's comments like what ever came out of Canada, and don't try to compare countries.
I came out of Canada, and I'm damn proud of it.
