Lady, people aren't chocolates. Do you know what they are mostly? Bastards. Bastard coated bastards with bastard filling. But I don't find them half as annoying as I find naive, bubble-headed optimists who walk around vomiting sunshine. -- Dr. Perry Cox
I don't believe that story at all. 1,000 years ago, those words wouldn't have existed, nor predecessors all in one language.
I've heard the one about English bowmen. That has a little more credibility to me, but I still wouldn't take it as gospel.

The story goes, that about 1000 years ago people used to have to get permission from the king to have a child, while the couple did the fun "work" that goes into getting a female pregnant they would have to hang a sign on their door. F.*.*.K. or Fornification Under Consent of King.

Some of those words existed a thousand years ago, but the Middle English for "king" was "cyning." Old English: "cynn."
The F-word, from what I understand, has it's origins in Sweden: fokka, to copulate.
The Dutch get some credit as well: fokken, to breed, as in to breed cattle.
Rags,
I do believe that the finger thing came from the archers. What I didn't really believe was that "pluck you" changed into something else.
