  • Do you really want a PS2?

PS2 now really for sale (in the US)

    Estimated Cost with 1 game + shipping: $650 - $800

    Cool

    Who wants one?

Btw, the game everyone wanted to see the sequal of on the PS2 (errrm, forgot what it was...) was bought by MicroSoft, so they could use it for their release of the X-Box.

And considering I already have a DVD player, and it uses proprietary $50 memory cards, and proprietary $50 controllers, and is likely to be recalled at least two or three times before a year is out, and you can't actually get one because no matter what anyone says they're already sold out...

      I'll pass, thanks.

        Jord,
Are you talking about MS buying Bungee software, and the game is HALO?

Can this thing play on line or just let you play with your self?

If it can play on line, can you connect to a PC based server?

That price is might steep becuase it's going for $430 over here.

          Ciao

            Gino,

The answer, generally, is no you can't connect to a PC-based server. iD and others are having a bad enough time trying to get PC and Mac systems to talk, nevermind PC and PSX2.

I'm helping someone hide a PS2 from his kids (Christmas present).

I'm not too impressed. The DVD playback is well subpar compared to my Toshiba SD-2200. I haven't kicked it around with many games, but its graphics are OK; however my PC and G400 are much, much better.

Too much $$$ just to play with yourself.

                  Thanks Wombat, that's the game

Apparently the PS2 has an Ethernet card that allows you to go online and download gamessoftware, mp3's and other stuff, so I guess playing online would be an option. Only by cable though?

The built in i.S400 i.LINK is for recording and playing back camcorder stuff.

Is it just me, or is the DVD playback on the PS2 really just a hardware-assisted player? Like the Hollywood?

I mean, I've seen some shots, and saw the thing running at a store, and my Pioneer (not the best DVD player on the market, but it plays burnt and pirated discs) is 100 times better.

Also, is it a rule that people who work at Babbages and Electronics Boutique must be out of touch with reality? I got into a little argument with these guys about the foolishness of networked FPS games on a Dreamcast or PS2...

                      Finally, I just said:

"Ok, look. You call me when you can plug your dreamcast or PS2 into your cable modem, play with the big boys in a 32-man deathmatch game, at 1600x1200 in 32-bit color. Until then, forget it."

And they were like "nobody's TV has that kind of resolution!".

                      *sigh*

One of my coworkers got a PS2 and he likes it. He hasn't commented about DVD playback, but I don't know if he's seen a real DVD player at work to comment on. He also doesn't really have a gaming machine, so...

I gave up on the console market after the Sega Saturn came out. PC gaming is just too much fun.

                        Jorden,

I was watching TechTV the other day (yes I am a geek) and they were interviewing some Sony guy. Apparently they will be releasing a NIC for high speed internet, a keyboard and mouse (USB) and a firewire hard drive for the PS2. That makes it possible to get MP3's, new levels, game updates and crap like that.

So basically they are trying to turn the PS2 into a computer you plug into a TV. Colleco Vision anyone? TI-99 4a? Apple IIe? X-box? I'll take my PC thanks.
