I just formatted the hard drive on my primary system this evening. I installed Media Player 6.4 and IE 5.01. Call me old fashion, but I think Denty is right. Out with the new and, for the time being, in with the old.

Hehehe did you just call an as400 a dumb terminal??

IBM probably has put a price on your head now

Just say you meant that he had a terminal connected to an as/400 and maybe they will call the dogs off

And i don't think you made any friends with compaq or m$ either for that matter . But I do think you are absolutly right..

Ehm..for Compaq and MS: He made me say that i agreed with him

So then - what do we all think of the upcoming Windows .NET 1 and 2 and IE6. MSN Explorer 6 and WMP7 offer a slight preview but is this where we want an OS to go?

I have a Linux loving friend who says that PCs are getting to user friendly - I disagree. I think that they are a long way from user friendly! They are friends for a little while and then along comes a freebie magazine CD! Boom goes the OS...or some other problem anyway.

MSN Explorer is not something I'd use a lot - I have used it and it integrates with WMP and MSN Messenger nicely. IE6 will also integrate these two apps but without the skin of MSN. So IE will come with the standard skin for proffesionals and the MSN Explorer skin for home users. Whistler is in a similar situation - Personal edition and Professional edition.

Is making the OS more user friendly a good thing for us techies? Will we be overtaken with these Compaq home PCs and Windows for dummies? Or will Microsoft keep the Professional line going...I hope so...

        Paul.

I don't think we have to worry about work for us techies, it may look simpler, but people (and software) can and always will mess up a pc or server .The 'hey i messed up my pc so i'll think i'll just slap in the recovery cd and format my drives' approach won't do in a business. Somebody has to fix it..

            Edski and others:

No slight meant on IBM there with the reference to "dumb terminal" (I'm hiding under my desk with keyboard in hand as I write this).

Pace: Never worry about Tech support running out of work. The main theme of my initial rant was meant to be the trend of herding stupid users like sheep with all the marketing crap, and the lack of choices. If you want a M$ machine to run,,,you BETTER use M$ software. These prefabs have completely killed any choice in basic application software.

And yes, of course the M$ applications run better than competitors...is anyone surprized by that? Many of us have simply given up even dreaming about choices in software where competition provides better and better value and more and easier to use features.
