  • Stupid consoles.....

It looks like PC game makers are slowly but surely starting to jump ship in favor of making games for consoles. This highly annoyes me since I feel that console games are mostly crap, lack the visual quality of PC games and are played mostly by under-aged, non-respectful kiddies. I am kind of blaming Microsoft for this. The stupid X-box will probably ruin it all for us. I pray for long delays and over-hype for that box. And I still don't feel better after typing this. Imagine a game world where you connect to the internet via your shiny new game console to play with a bunch of dis-respectful 14 year olds(kind of like how Counter-Strike is now) and there is nothing else to compete with it.

Get used to it, buy a Dreamcast PCI card add-on for your computer.
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

Ah, but this should all change with the release of X-Box.
What with X-Box for all terms & purposes being a cut-down PC, OS a lot smaller, OS loading from ROM etc.
What we basically have is a PIII, NVidia, DirectX console - just one easy step to port games over to the PC.
I think this is one of the major selling points to developers for X-Box, two markets for the price of one.
BTW, did you guys see the list of developers for X-Box?
What can I say but wow, the only noticeable software house missing from the list was EA (Hay, they aren't a major loss anyway)
It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.

I read that on www.planetdreamcast.com ... supposedly, there even was a Mega Drive PCI addon, but it didn't sell well (too expensive)... I hope they don't make the same mistake twice.

Sega is my favourite amongst all the console makers, eve as I type this, I have a Game Gear connected to the second head of my G400... 1024x768 on a 6cm screen yup, you should see how this looks when playing Need for Speed 4 or Quake.

Paulr: actually, EA games look and play great on a non-Matrox cards... dunno why

Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

I just played for over an hour on a couple of Sony Playstation 1's and 2's, but can't say that the games looked that good. Although the PS2's were lots better looking than the PS1's ofcourse.

But still, the overall image quality that I look for in games, like in NFS:PU, any Star Trek game of late, or even older games that have SVGA incorporated. You won't find it in the consoles I got to play with. the games look more like 320x200x16bit, very rough, no fun.

And the PS1's dual-shocks (the handhelds have a vibrator built in...) are nowhere compared to the PC's Force Feedback handhelds.

But then again, these things were made for kids, whereas our PCs were made for the mums&dads, one could say

I do not smoke (anything) eventhough sometimes I wish I was. I just compare.

My friend has a TNT2 Ultra and he does not lose 50% of his fps when he enables fog in NFS.

                        Am I asking to much?

1152x864x16bpp, full detail and fog on = choppy.

1152x864x16bpp, full detail and fog off = fast and fluid.

You don't remember the Mega PC's?
OK, just to go back in history a little (I only know about them because they company I used to work for sold them)
                          They were an Amstrad idea.
Basically what you got was a PC with a Sega MegaDrive built into it.
The PC was a very entry point 486, 486SX-25 if I remember correctly.
                          They shipped with 4MB RAM.
There was a MegaDrive slot on the outside of the case, allowing you to either have a PC or a Sega MegaDrive.
They used to sell very well, but they were very prone to breaking down, most people gave up on ever getting the Sega half of it to ever work and just used it as a PC.
It cost one penny to cross, or one hundred gold pieces if you had a billygoat.

Oh and on the issue of EA.
I wont miss them for two very good reasons.
They are a company who make a major part of their profits from sequels & 're-hashes'
Add this to the fact that the company seems to flat refuse to understand that Windows 2000 even exists.
When you look at the developer list for X-Box you can see it's EA's loss and certainly not anybody else's.

Paulr, I remember the MegaPC well - Didn't Silica Systems used to sell them? Cool idea though, asyou could use the PC's high-res monitor to play the megadrive games...
