    Smart dust, what's next???

    A group at the University of California at Berkeley has been funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to develop microscopic electronic "smart dust." The devices would be small and light enough to float in the air, gather enormous amounts of data, and send it to the operator. Each mote would be made up of microelectromechanical systems, or MEMS, making a simple computer with sophisticated sensor capabilities. When they become feasible, they could be set adrift anywhere to relay virtually everything there is to know about an environment. Eventually, scientist plan for the devices to share information as a "massively distributed intelligence."

      After spending the last 7 years working on MEMS devices I haven't gotten any smarter...DOH!!!!

                      I wonder what happens if you load up an air filter with smart dust?

                      Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

                        Actually this concept goes a bit futher than just dust... if each of these micromachines were designed to be integrated by their own design, then the defence dept could deploy them by using the wind or blowing them out of a truck passing down a road undetected. Then after a predetermined length of time they would collectively group up and reassmble into whatever weapon of war they needed... Blast a part of it off, more will replace those destroyed. Perdy nifty huh?! (scary shit if ya ask me!)

                          But these things must be very vunerable because of their small size.

                          I need to buy an EMP blaster. Maybe a mobile phone wil do, if I hold the antenna in my hand...
                          Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.
