The robot's sensors send "visual" signals to the lamprey's brain, which then directs the robot's motors to remain upright and follow a light source. The research is part of an effort to develop artificial limbs that will be controlled directly by people's brains. Team leader Sandro Mussa-Ivaldi said, "This is trespassing on nature but... It's worth it if it leads to new knowledge and better prosthetic limbs."
