Some of you may care....Metallica's Jason Newstead quit the band

Bummer I tell ya. I know that a lot of people are starting to dislike Metallica for various reasons but I grew up with them even before Jason joined the band so I'm bummed. I hope they find a good replacement.

Battery is a killer song. Probably one of my top 10 favorite songs from them.

Oh and mj12, you might as well get used to hearing Metallica songs for the rest of your life. They pretty much rate up there with Led Zeppelin and Hendrix as far as star status is concerned. And if you think it was really Metallica's time years ago, just ask the 55 million people who bought there last 6 albums for the last couple of years. And they do have more albums and they are currently working on another. They will always be around.

Paul, I think those guys were before my time as I don't remember them, although I'm not the hugest fanatic. When I was a kid I watched Jim Plunkett and Kenny King.

It's sad to see Jason leaving the band. He was one of the few members who actually tried to separate himself from the Napster deal. He is a very talented bassist too.

As far as Metallica, I think they have to be one of the most (if not THE most) important bands to emerge since the breakup of Led Zepp. They refined a sound that many implement in their music today, and it is a sound that still sounds as good today as it did back then. Don't believe me? Fire up Master of Puppets, crank it 10, and lay back and listen.

I agree that "Battery" is killer song and that Metallica were one of the most important bands in the 80s, but they became a rather boring mainstream band in the 90s. I guess that's one of the reasons why Jason left the band - it's no secret that he's a big fan of heavy and aggressive music, and I expect we'll see him again one day in a band that really kicks ass (wasn't he planning a project together with Devin Townsend some time ago?)

Here here, Jason is a damn fine bassist indeed. They're going to have a lot of trouble trying to fill his shoes.

I'm not sure whether you are referring to the entire albumn or the song itself, but it works either way. Master of Puppets is far and away my favorite albumn. My favorite Metallica song is still Sanitarium. It's too bad I don't have the CD anymore. I let someone borrow it and they never gave it back.

Well, the press release that Metallica issued seemed to imply that Jason just needed some time off to think and spend time with his family (not to rule out the definate possibility that he just didn't like where the band was going anymore.)

On a complete side note, what did you guys think of S&M? A lot of people were calling them sellouts for making that albumn. Personally I loved it. Having an orchestra in the background just gave an epic quality to some of their greatest songs. (I still wish they had included Unforgiven though ) Part of the reason I feel that way though is because I love orchestral/classical music. Heck, the Moody Blues used an orchestra with almost everything they did and they were extremly popular at one time as well.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling now.

Yes sir, Metallica was a killer band, back up to LOAD. After that, they completely lost it. I saw them live twice here in Portugal, the first one with Suicidal Tendencies (one of my fave bands) and The Cult, and the second time with Corrosion of Conformity (one of my fave bands, too). I was amazed to say the least.

Master of Puppets and ...And Justice for All are their best albums, in my opinion.

What can I say? They´re a historical band.

I'm so with you on that.. I was a huge Metallica fan until there Load cd. I actually went to see them live on the Load tour. They played maybe two songs from that cd the whole concert. I was third row back on the floor. It was nice.. they throw a good show. After the Load cd though, I just quit listening to them completely. They've lost it. Time for them to go.

I still love Metallica. Just usually not the stuff they play on the radio.

I didn't care for S too much. I liked the little I heard of "Garage Inc.". I like the cover of "Whiskey in the Jar".

My favorite off of Master of Puppets has to be "Leper Messiah", but I like "Sanitarium" too.

I went to the Load concert when they were here in Salt Lake City. The opener was Korn who, unfortunately, sound even worse in concert than they do on their albums....

Other than the opener, that was one of the best concerts I've been to.

Hopefully they'll remove the 2x4's from their asses and come back to earth....

I was referring to the entire album Master of Puppets. It's probably the best heavy metal album of all time. From start to finish everything fits, and it's a fine piece at that.

And Justice For All could have been so much more if the album would have been produced by someone competent, it's a shame too, because it has really good music on it.

Altho, my favorite Metallica song would have to be Fade to Black.

My copy of MoP was stolen out of my car a few years back (along with my Clarion deck), and I've yet to replace it. Maybe I'll hop on to gnutella to get it back...
