Good thing I live on a hill.

We've had problems with dams in the past. We build reservoirs here by damming up entire valleys and filling them with water. This has been going on for some time. I believe the first time we tried it, the dam broke and drowned hundreds of people in the middle of the desert. No earthquake. It just broke. Fifteen *billion* gallons of water poured through Ventura County on it's way to the ocean. Bodies were found in inland canyons and washed up on beaches as far away as San Diego.

Personally, I think that if you're living in a desert, you shouldn't have to think about flood insurance or drowning in your living room.

Now, in most places, history would take a dim view of a man who was considered responsible for so much death and destruction. Instead, we named a street in Los Angeles after him: Mulholland Drive.

      Jorden: Some clarifications!!
The magnitude of the quake was 6.9 as measured by Indian authorities, but some foreign scientists claim that it was 7.9! Now this is weird, coz the difference is rather too much!
Another correction: We celebrated our 50th year of freedom on the 15th of August 1999. The day when the quake struck (26th Jan 2001), the Republic Day (which is the day when our constitution came into force) was being celebrated.
Although I'm in New Delhi, which is quite far off from the epicentre, the quake was pretty strong here also. It managed to shake up everyone here quite a bit (both literally and figuratively!)
      Cheers
