I'll take a stab at it.
Over here Fords are garbage. They break down on a regular basis, and have terrible longevity.
I imagine that in Europe, Ford has to have their act together. America is a throwaway society. People buy a new car every 4 years.
Over here, if there were a Ford that ran for 250k miles (like the one in the earlier post), it would be as much of a miracle as walking on water.
As for our fear of Japanese cars, it's mostly due to their safety record (less than stellar) and their maintenance record (Toyota and Honda have gotten much better, but many other companies haven't).
Our fascination with European cars comes from the fact that they are well-built. My BMW has proven cheaper to fix and maintain than my Ford Escort or my Oldsmobile Cutlass ever were. Not as cheap as the Toyota Corolla I drove for a couple years, but pretty cheap overall.
And the Escort and Cutlass would never have made it 250k miles.
My Volvo and my BMW are both over 100k miles now, and both run like new. I'm not just saying "like new" to be optimistic. I mean "like new". Same power, same smoothness, same luxury as when they rolled out of the factory.
That's why we love these cars. Well, some of us. Others just want the prestige. Of course.
