  • to the fins here...

my girlfriend has just discovered this that band called "Eläkeläiset" (she finds them funny...) and wanted to know what "Humpa" means (if it is really a word, not just some sound...)

do you actually know the band? there seem to be plenty of fans, judging from napster files... (and what does the name mean?)

    thx

Humppa (two p's) is a traditional Finnish dance. Isn't there an English word, "oompah" ? If there is, that's the closest equivalent... Both words are kinda onomatopoetic, if you know how the music sounds

"Eläkeläiset" means "The Pensioners". I've heard of the band, after all Finland is quite a small country... As far as I know they make a kind of parody of the real "humppa" bands of the past decades.

And you dance Humppa kinda like waltz but a bit more bouncy.

              I hope this makes sense.

Edit: And if you want to listen to wierd Metallica, try Apocalyptica and their CD Plays Metallica With Four Cellos, which basically tells it all.
