  • Where do Names come from?

Have you ever wondered where your name (I mean your real first name) has come from? My first name is Ville, and it's a "finnish translation" of Wilhelm, whose old form is Willahelm (old german language), which means (about) "hard-willed helmet guy". Tell me about your name, please!
Hey, maybe you and I could... you know... [SLAP] Agh!

Dunno where 'Stephen' or even 'Steve' comes from (anyone?), but I do know that my surname 'Cooper' is from years and years ago - a 'Cooper' was a 'barrel-maker'.

My name is "Denis", and in french (which I am) it means son of god. But then Jesus would mean something else, probably "best party dude ever!" since he can turn water into wine. I wonder if he can turn anything into beer? But still being able to turn any crappy liquid (hehe, I mean non-alcoholic) into an alcoholic beverage would be SWEEt!

Jesus would always be the first guy invited to a party!

CHARLES (m) From the Germanic name Karl, which was derived from a Germanic word which meant "man" (cognate with the Old English word ceorl). The most noteworthy bearer of this name was Charles the Great, commonly known as Charlemagne, a king of the Franks who came to rule over most of Europe. Several Holy Roman Emperors bore this name, as well as kings of England, France, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, and Hungary. Other famous bearers include naturalist Charles Darwin who revolutionized biology with his theory of evolution, and novelist Charles Dickens who wrote such works as 'Great Expectations' and 'A Tale of Two Cities'.

          Jolley means, well, jolly.

So I guess my name means "Happy man".
          How about that!

KENNETH (m) Either "handsome" from Gaelic Coinneach, or "born of fire" from Gaelic Cinaed. This was the name of the first king of the Picts and Scots.

Don't know what your name means?

I have the same first name as cjolly... but my last name is Buckton

              Buck - Male Deer
              Ton - Heavy Weight.

              So I would be either
              Man Deer Heavy
              Deer Heavy Man
              Heavy Man Deer

If you add in my middle name :

EDWARD (m) "rich guard" from Old English ead "rich, blessed" and weard "guard". Saint Edward the Confessor was the king of England shortly before the Norman Conquest. Because of his popularity this name remained in use after the conquest (most other Old English names were replaced by Norman ones), and was even the name of eight subsequent kings of England. Edward is also one of the few Old English names to be used throughout Europe.

              Then I would be

              Man Rich Guard Deer Heavy
              Rich Man Deer Heavy Guard
              Deer Rich Heavy Guard Man
              Man Deer Guard Rich Heavy
              Rich Heavy Man Deer Guard
              Guard Rich Deer Heavy Man
              Rich Man Deer Guard Heavy

I would like to think it is the last one

You Guys better watch out for my overwhelming Deer Guard Forces

DANIEL (m) "God is my judge" from the Hebrew name Daniyel. Daniel was a Hebrew prophet whose story is told in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. He lived during the Jewish captivity in Babylon, where he served in the court of the king, rising to prominence by interpreting the king's dreams. The book also presents Daniel's four visions of the end of the world. Famous bearers of this name include English author Daniel Dafoe, Swiss mathematician Daniel Bernoulli, American frontiersman Daniel Boone, and MURC forum poster fds.

I definitely don't have any visions of the end of the world though.

                  OK, here we go

FRIEDRICH (m) German form of FREDERICK. This was the name of kings of Germany. The philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche and the socialist Friedrich Engels are two famous bearers of this name.

(and to understand the actual meaning of my name here the one it derived from: )

FREDERICK (m) "peace ruler" from Germanic frid "peace" and ric "power". Several rulers of Prussia, Germany, and the Holy Roman Empire have borne this name, including the 12th-century patron of the arts Frederick II of Germany, and the 18th-century Frederick II of Prussia, know as Frederick the Great. Also, Frederick Douglass was an American ex-slave who became a leading advocate of abolition.

Look at that, i`m Ivan. My name is Jane, though.

IVAN (m) Russian, Czech, Serbian, and Croatian form of JOHN. This was the name of several rulers of Moscow, including Ivan the Great and Ivan the Terrible, the first czar of Russia. Other notable bearers include Ivan Turgenev, a Russian author who wrote 'Fathers and Sons', and Ivan Pavlov, a scientist and physiologist best known for his discovery of the conditioned reflex.

Unghh. My name (in Macedonian) is Jane. Translated in ... well ... russian/bulgarian/serbian is Ivan (which is acceptable, pretty common name, other people know it too), english is John (or Ian) etc.

That`s why i said i was Ivan. You (all) are familiar with it. I bet you never heard of a masculine name Jane.

I could have said i was John (or Ian), it`s just that Ivan is closer to me. It`s a slavic name, yet not unheard of.

Oh, this is so confusing. I cant blame you though, cjolley, if i was in your place, i`d lol at me. Or you. Or Jane. Whatever.
