  • Your favourite bit of road

Thought I might try to get the car-related threads started again.

This time, describe your favourite bit of road - either an actual piece of road, or just a particular type of road that you like - and why you like it.

    8<--------- Cut'n'Paste'n'Modify here -------

The Road: Highway 17 through the Blackbutt Ranges about 1 1/2 hours north west of Brisbane. It's only about 2 or 3 kilometres long, and I've only driven it about 6 times, but I've enjoyed every inch of it each time.

    Why: It's your typical sort of mountain climb (although we're only talking about 300m altitude change here), with about a dozen or so left right alternating bends all separated by about 100-200m. Basically it consists of accelerate hard to fourth gear; brake, downshifting to second; take bend; repeat;

The car: My 1997 Pulsar LX (although it would be nice to do it in a Skyline GT-R or some such supercar, but let's be realistic ).

The music: The exhaust note from my 3" exhaust and the occasional Bellbird call from the forest.

North Highway 14 going from Tijeras Canyon to the top of Sandia Peak. Goes from 6500 ft to 10600 ft. with lots of hair-pin curves.

    And on any fast motorcycle

Highway 400 from Toronto to Sudbury. (almost 400 Kilometers of very very straight road, with an occasional bend)

Its amazing how often you can go as fast as you can on this road...

I'll have to be dull and say the A50.

I can get form Leicester to Liverpool airport much faster than on any motorway.

Its wide, flat, straight and there are no speed cameras
The Welsh support two teams when it comes to rugby. Wales of course, and anyone else playing England

I know what you mean. On a field trip for work, we were coming back from St George through Moonie, and some of those straights were up to 30kms long. The road went over hill after hill, so it wasn't too boring, but I do remember sitting at over 120km/h in a Turbo Diesel 4wd ute (made by Isuzu). That was about as fast as I was willing to go, because the nose had a tendancy to wander off course and the steering was very vague. Fun.

The Road: 1979 Route 66 from Oklahoma City to Tulsa.

              Why: Hey! It's Route 66.
Nice 2 lane highway with cool curves, straights, and a few cute little towns

The car: 1971 BMW 2002. The original Pocket Rocket. I loved that car.

The music: Rush; Red Barchetta of course.

It's gotta be the road (not sure of names/numbers) going between Ottawa Ontario and Mont Tremblant in Quebec. Lots of two lane twisties all through the Laurentian mountains. I've never done it in a particularly quick car though, just my Protege (at least it has a rev-happy engine and a slick 5-speed). Some day I'll do it in some car with a big M on it ...
