Thermal paste smeared over L2 Cache???

I think it means, Thermal paste on L2. Cache? As in L1 is used for multiplier, L2 used to set multiplier of cache?

It might have shorted out some pins on the L2 connections, and be running a 2:1 ratio or something (ie, CPU at 1Gig, cache at 2 gig).

        Just a thought

Zinc oxide based thermal compound (as used above) is completely nonconductive and thus wouldn't have caused this bird burning up.

Not having a HS installed or incorrectly installed would have.

I wonder what the death toll on that was

I wouldn't have wanted to be in the way of that heatsink when It came flying off the CPU (after the retention clip broke). Being a Duron owner myself, I know the sort of energy stored in a properly mounted heatsink. I can't imagine how much tension there was on that improperly mounted heatsink

I find such gratutious depictions of carnage highly offensive, personally. That pic should be replaced with a url and a warning.

It's just of some of the half cocked stuff that's sent by kiddies to [H]ocp just for what they believe is fame and glory Chuck.

Ya don't want to see my Celeron 2... all four edges of the core have been rounded off but it still runs. Golden Orb... worked fine on my K6-2 550 system, but the retarded "twist-clip" thing eats delicate CPU cores for dinner. At least now I'm running an Alpha PAL6035 with the annoying delta fan, much easier on the CPU as far as stress and temperature are concerned.

Naw... but after 20 HS/cpu tests there is alot more surrounding the substrate!

Gotta get me more shop towels!

I have almost seen the same thing in a celeron based Computer!

The pga hs was mounted the wrong way and it still had the faktory seal.

The customer complained that the system was unstable!

With only 10% surface contact he should be happy it wasn't a Duron or a Athlon!
