  • Do we try as hard as we used to?

I was wondering - I know it's true for me to an extent - do we all still try as hard as we used to to get the last ounce of performance from our systems? I mean, my CPU is 930MHz, my HDD is 7200rpm, I have loads of memory, and a G400 runs most of my stuff ok.

Do we still care about installing the lastest drivers for a 2% boost in drive read speed, or 1 extra fps in Q3? I used to spend more time configuring the thing than using it, but not anymore. If it works ok, and doesn't crash, then it gets left.

Am I getting old (32), or have PCs got to the point where we can afford to be lazy now?

    Tony.

I also don't have as much fun tweaking anymore... it just isn't worth the hassle most of the time.

        Celeron 566 -> 901... worth it.
My Ex-GF2 GTS Hours to tweak it to gain 3 FPS.. not worth it.
Hard Drive... Tweaking Not worth it.
Ram... Set at 2/2/2/5-7 works... not much else to do.
Windows... works ok... don't want to mess it up.
Swap and stuff... cacheman 5 takes care of all that.
CD-Roms... work good... not much to do there.
        Monitor... shows a picture...

Its just not as fun anymore... *sigh*

I think its time to save up and buy all new hardware and software to get me tinkering again.

Although.. i am trying to get Debian to work on the system in my specs as I decided windows was getting too boring...

It works good until I try to get X working....

I finally got the video to possibly work (Still unsure as X doesn't start) but my USB mouse is giving me a hassle and I have been tinkering for the past two days on it...

If you want fun... change your OS to something you have never used before if you can... that will give you something to do.

EDIT : AND YOU AREN"T ALLOWED TO LOOK AT THE MANUAL

I'm never satisfied with my computer. I get a new part and think it's sloooowww...so I spent all the time tweaking until I buy a new part!

Should have been born in the year 3000 or something but even then I'm sure there would be something to tweak!

Tweaking is a matter of money for me. When I have money I tweak, haven't tweaked much recently.
Hehe last bit of tweaking was changing out my Generic 128 MB sticks which wouldn't run at 133 (although it was supposed to be "PC133") for some Kingston Value RAM (nominally PC133 CAS 3) that I'm running at 133 CAS2. Haven't run NVmark yet but shall do so soon.
