The Doldrums are a part of the ocean around the equater that is really inactive, with very unusually calm winds. When someone says they are in the doldrums, it usually means they are stuck in a rut, have no energy, no drive, or are depressed.
Actually the doldrums is an old nautical word. When ships would sail across the ocean there was a spot near the equator where there was absolutely no wind. It was called the doldrums. If a ship got caught in the doldrums it could drift for months with no direction. Many times the crew would die because they got stranded in the doldrums.
Now we use it describe a slowing economy or a bad or depressing period of time.
