Look, here's the trouble - the militant Islamics hate EVERYONE that isn't Islamic. It's pretty simple.

And the non-militant Islamics, while they don't "condone" that point of view, also feel an obligation or kinship with the militant Islamics... and therefore won't police them.

That leaves us with two options.

1. Partition off the middle east. Don't let anyone in or out. Let them have their sacred muslim state... of course this also cuts off our negotiations and dealings with the inside, with Israel, with Egypt, with all of our allies in the area.

2. Piss them off. Because you must understand - there is no way NOT to piss off militant Islamics. Our very existence pisses them off, and if they have to look at us they start wanting to kill us.

It has NOTHING to do with the US's foreign policy. It has NOTHING to do with choices we've made. It has EVERYTHING to do with their desire to kill anyone that is different from them, and our unwillingness to hide and keep out of their sight.

Here's my $.02

Remeber that OBL has stated we ALL are targets for his faction. That means women,children,elderly etc.. We have only made the distinction between military and civilian targets in wartime in the last 40 years due to technological advances. Only supporters surround OBL and his groups, so there are no civilians surrounding him as far as I am concerned.

It takes VERY expensive munitions to target a single builing as opposed to "carpet bombing" done in WW2/Korea/Vietnam. Should we expose our military to the risks involved with targeting a single site instead of safely bombing from high altitudes the snot out of whole regions where OBL is hiding?

Well, we got our ass handed to us in the War of 1812. We declared war, tried to take Canada, and ended up losing more men and having DC burned to the ground. Guess you forgot that one. You can't really dispute the results.

Once we were stronger, we assaulted Panama and took what we needed to build the Canal. Why? We wanted it. Part of our long tradition as bullies. In the words of our very own President, "I took Panama and let Congress debate that while I went ahead and built the canal."

Viet Nam? We never <I>declared</I> war, but we spent enough time and lives there. We weren't wanted, and didn't make a difference. The Vietnamese still have a national holiday when they celebrate the defeat of the Americans.


As for WWII, it wouldn't have been so hard for the Allies to win if America hadn't been funding the German economy for so long. "Gee, all these nice cheap clothes, goods, and cars. I won't ask where they came from."

Iran-Contra? Bay of Pigs? Here we quietly funded people who could be considered little more than mercenaries for our own ends, and then tried to hush things up when it failed.
