There's not a lot you could do to protect the engine.

Sure there is..
Seagull hits churning fan blades of jet engine- chunks of dead seagull are drawn into engine causing all sorts of problems including possibly explosion followed by crashing and mass death.
Seagull hits pointy bullet shaped screen thing protruding from front of engine- dead (or if lucky, dazed) seagull is deflected from engine before reaching churning fan blades, so no death and destruction.
So why don't they (or why don't they need to) put huge tea strainer-like things out in front of engine intake fans?
Let's ask Mikey.. he knows everything.. (besides, he was in the Air Force. )

Well, extra turbulence for one. Also, a deflector would not protect the entire blade mechanism. If you used a screen, then what would happen as the screen was covered with debris, and airflow was reduced?Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. The vacuum at the intake is far to great to prevent FOD (foriegn object damage) from occuring.
Much research has been conducted and the end result is prevention is the best medicine. Many airports employ a vast array of low/high tech systems to prevent such from happening... including people only there to watch for birds and cravass the runway/taxiways/flightlines and pick up debris.
Have a look see here...

KV modern commercial jet engines can usually take a bird hit. It happend on one I was on landing in Belfast. Apparently its no big deal....
remember though that a bit of debris did destroy a concorde - though not through the engine....
(a flock might be!!)
PS where do you get them from, Greebe!!!
