Well, America adheres pretty well to capitalism....what else would you expect in the US?

A good portion of the most advanced medical research comes out of private American companies and corporate funded academic research. Almost all medical research comes out of the industrialized nations. There are reasons for this trend. One very good reason for this is the capital gain when the research succeeds.

Take away the capital incentives, and you will probably see much less research done. Everything comes at a price, advanced medical techniques, unfortunately, have high price tags. However we wouldn't have them in the first place if people weren't making money by developing them.

Not a whole lot in the world is done purely from the "goodness" of people's hearts. Money talks. It may be unfortunate, but again, we wouldn't be where we are today without it.

And don't even waste your breath trying to compare any other country's public education system to that of America. There are just too many differences (social, economic, culture, language) to make much of a comparison. There are even vast differences from state to state and from city to city within a state.

This thread had been quiet for a while, but I found an article that was just too apropos.

Homeless Canadians AND their drunk, argumentative, government representative. Read carefully, and you'll find one guy that's employed and still can't afford a place to live.
