A "flatmate" is a British term for a roommate. In the UK (and several other places) an apartment is called a "flat". Your friends, who you often room with to save cash, are called mates. Therefore, a friend that lives in the same flat as you, is a "flatmate".
EDIT: For you non-North American's...a roommate in the US and Canada does not always mean you live in the same room as that person. If you live in the same flat, apartment, town house, etc. you are called roommates, even when you live in different rooms.

Priceless. I think I may get a poster shop to make me a gigantic poster of it and then tack it to my roommate's wall when he's not looking one day....maybe he'll get the message? Ah, probably not, I think he's a little too dense to realize it.
