Never seen Titanic and did not like LOTR

I did not find LOTR an enjoyable movie at all. On the contrary it was very borring, long and completely devoid of any underlying meaning.

I do agree that the movie as such is indeed very good. Good acting, good directing etc but as far as the content goes it sucked. Nothing special to it. A simple story with simple characters and simple ending!!!

LOTR is simply a good movie, not an excellent movie.

well, the good thing about the story and the ending is, that there are 2 more movies yet to come, which will continue the story, fellowship was more like an introduction

        The ending

I do not know if the ending of the films will follow the books, but the ending of the books was terrible.

What? You can't just say something like that without elaborating. I, for one, greatly appreciate the fact that the book didn't come to a screeching halt after the main climax.

            Climax??

What Climax? Thats the problem. There was no climax!! The climax was expected thus making it rather disapointing. I was reading through the books expecting a huge climax at the end. Something that never passed from my mind. However what I found out was that the climax was the first thing that occured to me. That was rather unoriginal.

Furthermore, regarding to the characters in the books. They are so simple. Besides some background info on the characters like genealogy their private lives are not exposed at all. No single hint of feeling towards the oposite sex. I found the post about the LOTR characters a while ago really funny. Are they all gay??

My impression of the book was that is it well suited for a younger audience. Maybe I am too old (24) to read it now. I believe most of you read it at a younger age.

Anyway, that's my feelings about the books.

              (<B>Warning:</B> frigging huge spoiler)

What climax? Oh, you know, just little things like the ultimate turn of the tides outside of Minas Tirith, the slaying of the Witch King, or the last stand outside Mordor, as Frodo claims the One Ring, and Smeagol accidentally saves the world.

Have you stopped to think for a second that maybe all of what you consider unoriginal only seems familiar because it has been poorly imitated for the last fifty years?

What simple characters? There is personality, culture, hatred and trust, and tons of mystery. Tolkein had this entire world running around in his head, and it shows.

Sexuality: Sam has a crush, who who returns to marry. Maybe you missed the couple of huge marriages at the end of the book. A couple of curious moments between Eowyn and Aragon? Aragorn and Arwen(who chose love over immortality)? Faramir and Eowyn? The Ents constant longing for the Entwives? Gimli thought Galadriel was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, but because he didn't exclaim "Wow, I'd like to bone her!" you didn't see it?

The book is good for any age. I read it when I was 12, and I read it again last November, and I'm 23.

Maybe you need to go watch more vanDamme movies or something. I don't know why you can't enjoy this wonderfully rich story, or at least why you seem blind to so many of its most redeeming qualities. You don't have to like the book, but don't insult its author's skills, or the intelligence of the other readers.

I completely agree with Wombat. I read them when I was 12, then after I saw the movie, I read all of the books again, from the Hobbit to The Return of the King. Tolkien originally wrote the 'trilogy' as a single long story, but the publishers wouldn't have it, and he chopped it into thirds. The climax is supposed to happen at the end, the battle at Minas Tirith, and the Mountain of Doom. As for the books 'bad ending', how would you have felt if the book was cut when they all part? You would have felt that there should have been a whole other book/trilogy/eon to continue the great story. He ends it, and gives a conclusion for most, and it all fits in with the idea that the book was written by Frodo, and is told from the perspective that it was all history, and you are merely reading the history book. Or did you miss that?

                  LOTR

It was not my intention to insult anyones inteligence and if you feel insulted then I apologise. I merely said what i felt about the books.

I have read many authors, mainly Science Fiction and a few fantasy, and I did not feel the excitement I feel with other books. Maybe his style does not fit my taste very well .

Maybe I would get agry too If one you guys said something bad about my favorite author (Greg Bear).

One of the problems here, Eftychios, is one of language.

And I'm not just saying that he uses powerful English (which he does) and that you aren't grasping all of it (which I'm sure you aren't).

Many Americans and Britons don't grasp all of it, either. He starts off in a very storybook, children's novel style (this WAS intended to be a sequel to the Hobbit originally, although that idea was abandoned after a few chapters) and continues on in a very high English, filled with lots of wherefores and whatnots and prosaic constructions.

You have to "get into" his style before you can really appreciate the story. If you never quite get your head into that style of English, you can never quite get into the story... and it will, in fact, seem a bit stuffy and lifeless I'm afraid.

it is 3:30 on the first DVD, real link doesnt work, though

they cant release the 4:45 version yet, because they would have to put to much work into the scenes that werent edit for release, and they cant becaue they are doing that for part 2, and then for part 3

The English is easy. It's the Cirth and Tengwar that are a real bitch.

                              Eftychios:

It's not the DIFFICULTY of the language. I already said that. It's the tone, the style. Until you get your head into it, it seems very dry. But it's full of subtle humor and lots of subtexts - but you have to get into it to see them.
