I loved this comment:
How very French of them....
If this is typical European justice, these guys will get life in prison while the rest of us will just have to be more compassionate and understand the radical Islamic terrorist who gets a slap on the hand after torching a cathedral full of rosy-cheeked English 5 year olds.

Shame on Britain for allowing this!
I used to think that becoming a part of the EU was ultimately for the best. Recent events such as this, EU Bureaucracy and their general lameness in world affairs are rapidly turning me against *becoming* European.
Does anyone here have any good reasons why the UK should become part of this mess.

In the long run the EU will fail over the intergration. Why becuase we're all independant countries. No one likes to to be told what to do by someones whos not from there own country and hasn't been voted for by themselfs. People will see Europe as a interferring non represent dictatorship where the views of their own nation are disguarded. Smaller countries will be ignored and will be used as test grounds for political idealism. Just like Scotland and Wales has been in the past under the flag of the UK.
The do goody laws of Europe protect the crimminal and not the victimn of crimes. It should be up to the individual states to set their own laws.

Yes!
Why should we be the only ones stuck in this mess!
But don´t panic! The only dictatorship the EU will deliver will be the dictation of Kapitalism (money brings everyone together=).
Btw: If the UK will join the European Union (should be about at the same time they liberate the Irish... ;-) they could take the "Texas" part in the E-Union. Would be fitting, though. There is no weakness, but to cringe and despair because one thinks oneself weak.
For so long as one´s will is undefeated one is strong, for so long as the desire for revenge still endures.

Europe is a mass of independant countries with independant cultures and languages.
We've fought two major wars this century and have generally been at each others throats ever since the Romans went home.
The only times we get together at a national level is when we need someone to ally with to invade someone else or defend ourselves against someone else.
Why anyone thinks we're all going to join hands and skip happily into the future is beyond my limited understanding.
'Romani aunt domus? People called Romani they go the house?'
'It says Romans Go Home!'
'No it doesn't.'

If you mean Northern Ireland/Ulster, I'm not going to comment. No matter what you say you always upset someone.Athlon XP-64/3200, 1gb PC3200, 512mb Radeon X1950Pro AGP, Dell 2005fwp, Logitech G5, IBM model M.

Personally, I still think economic unity is a viable possibility and should be attempted. Otherwise we'll have trouble standing up to some countries that are going to give us a hard time in the coming years.
As to political unity, I don't believe in it either, but maybe that's because I get it mixed up and feel it threatens our cultural identity...

PS: Hm.... I'd never realized we were considered the n°1 "Metricites"... Oh well.... we're the scapegoats...

Or are you talking about the fact that all EU countries have agreed to abolish the death penalty? Now that's a different discussion but we've had it before and I don't want to start it again...
