  • Crybabies at the Olympics..

I haven't been watching the Olympics all that much in the past two weeks but I had it on last night and the big thing that stuck out was that the Russians where threating to pull out because they didnt like the way the Judges where Judging and they are still Furious over having to share a gold medal with Canada in pairs Ice Skating....Jeeze

Next up we have South Korea pulling a hissy fit after one of the their speed skaters lost his gold metal for blocking the US skater from passing him in the last turn. They are so pissed about it that they might not even show up for the next summer Olympics. There was also talk of a lawsuit over this (hey sounds like they are learning about the US pretty good...if you dont like it sue over it!)

It seems to me that everyone is getting their panties in a bunch over some stupid sports....its about the people in the sport not if they win a metal or not...

Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

I didn't see the Russians pissing and moaning when other nations athletes were disqualified for failing the drug tests. If they were so bloddy upset about how that is handled they would/should have yelled about it ages ago.
I also found their comment that without them there would be no Olympics a little less than self effacing

As for the South Koreans.... pppfffftttt....

Their skater does a very obvious block, which is rules for disqualifiaction in every skating organization around the world, and he gets called on it.

So....where's the problem with following the rules??

Do they think they have a nationality based exclusion from this rule, just like the Russians think they have one for drug monitoring??

If they both took their teams home and refused to play it wouldn't be any skin off my nose. It just shows how deeply rooted their own problems are.

Please do the background before jumping into conclusions.

In the skating where Russian couple had to share the gold, USA, Kanada, Germany and Japan ranked Kanadian couple as first where as Russia, China, Ukraine, Poland and France voted Russians to be the best.

So what's wrong with this picture? The fact that France was the only western country to vote Russia lead "communism" to victory. This cannot happen on U.S. soil so immediate action had to take place. Clearly the French judge was biased - she broke the western front!

See what the Russians are mad about now? It's all about politics in the games, nothing to do with sports..

problem is, Burri from Phinland, the Russian pair had one big problem and one small, but still noticeable problem(he nearly fell on a landing and she had a wobbly landing), whilst the Canadian pair had a nearly perfectly skated program. Very nicely done!

Nowhere do I deny the Russian skaters marks. They were right on, perfect for thier program, mostly 5'8s and 5'9s. I just question the Canadian marks. They should have had 2 or 3 5'9s and the rest 6'0 with their performance.

Russia has dominated this sport for 40 years and they can't handle the possiblily of losing thier grip on it. So they will do anything to keep it.

As well, they are under investigation for blood doping in X-country skiing. Larrisa Lazertina(sp?) had such a high red blood cell count as to be deemed unsafe to her health to compete. This sort of thing is nothing new, but when you are busted, take it like an honourable athlete and do the right thing. There is nothing to protest here. They should be glad they haven't taken her medal away from the individual event earlier.

and I am not one to go with the popular opinion. If you use these fori frequently, you will see that I have taken the side of unpopularity on occasion, when I felt strongly about it. Much to my own downfall usually, as I am slammed for it So you can't say that I am against "communist" or other non-north americans as a rule. If I felt that the Russian pair or Ms Lazertina deserved better, you can be sure I would speak up.

Oh, and another thing. Apparently the Russian federation is protesting a game(hockey??) that they won!!! Gimme a break! Lets just all protest everything! We could send all fat, cigar smoking beer drinkers with no athletic prowess at all, and let the protest people win us the medals.

"introducing, representing Russia, Vladimir Pootchkin" <cheers>
"yes Don, he's a known veteran from way back, I believe he was in the original protest group in Salt Lake back in 02"

                "That far back Bill"

"yes and he's expected to hold his own against the best protesters from the Ukraine and Korea"

etc, etc, with less and less emphasis on the athletes...

boy I bit on that eh? Ya landed me like a big ol bass

To the point, you seem to forget that is skating results are subjective as in opinion of the judge. There's no absolute truth as there is no absolute results in any beauty contest.

Read my post above and consentrate on the countries listed there. Note the west vs. communism pattern there. Now, that is completely normal because of the politics. For the same reason Sweden used to give Finland one point in the Eurovision song contest in the years they still let crappy songs to the stage.

While many people other than the judges liked Canadian couple better doesn't make them winners. The rules are that judges decide the winners based on their professional view. There's no proof presented that French judge was biased; what I said above was a joke, if you didn't get it..

Olympic Committee themselves showed that sport results can be set in a court room. Why can't Russia try to exploit that like Canada did? OC made the first mistake themself, they opened the door. They changed the rules after the contest!

Given the Canadian blood in your veins, I dont' expect to hear a relevant, argumentative reply from you about this matter.

About the Russian skiiers, on that the issue is about letting the whole team/country outside the contest because one non-clean conpetitor. How wrong is that? Seems like not very, since it's the Russians! I wonder why these incidents always happen to USAs favourite enemies of the time..

                    Buuri,
Yes, skating is subjective, but much more so on the artistry than the technical aspects. However, if you look at the performances side by side, and the technical scores, how did the Russian skaters get superior marks?

About disqualifying the entire team: What else should they have done? It's a <B>relay</B> event. If they lose a team member, they're done. They're already letting her keep other medals she won while doped up.

                    >There's no proof presented that French judge was biased

Except that France said so. Go figure.

Yeah, Buuri from FINLAND (which was Russia's actual enemy when it sided with Germany in WW2, which we won't go in to), why do you cozy up to the Russians yourself? Are you one of this throng of brainwashed Europeans who sees America as the "enemy?" I certainly don't see Russia as any enemy of ours anymore. Gorbachev pretty much put an end to that, as I remember, and thank God he did. The whole cold war thing was monumentally stupid, in my opinion. Let's get beyond that.

Russians need to stop being paranoid about the whole olympics thing. Nothing that happened was targeted toward them at all. Why should it be? For instance, if Irina Slutskaya (who imho was the sweetest, sexiest babe on ice the other night, but putting that aside) had skated the program Sarah Hughes did, and executed it as flawlessly as she did, I would have been as happy as could be to see her win. It was unfortunate for her that she didn't. Michelle Kwan fell in her program and got bumped down to third spot, and she was the crowd favorite. How could that have happened? Wouldn't the crowd's bias taint the judging? Wouldn't they have overlooked her fall so they could just give her the gold medal? It's too bad that Kwan and Slutskaya could outskate Hughes maybe 9 out of 10 times, because they didn't the other night. And the judges awarded the gold medal based on performance, not reputation. It was totally justified.

I don't know the particulars of the blood test given to the Russian cross country skiier, but the menstrual cycle excuse is old hat by now.

BTW, how's Finland's cross country team doing, watching TV from home because of the blood doping scandal? At least your officials had the class to be ashamed at what happened.

Her blood level had hemoglobin above the legal limit (and "danger to her life"). You can't pull that off unless you're taking hormones to boost red blood cell production. It's popular with the biking circuit.

I don't know how &lt;insert Wombat's favourite tabloid&gt; has reported that, but she actually denies all the accusations. Higher Olympic officials claim she has admit that behind closed doors, but in every statement she has given to the public, she refused to second those claims.

Well I don't know see maybe change the competitor which normally can be done. In this case, that was explicitly denied, hence the anger on Russian part.

Why wouldn't I be? Finland has no enemies at this time, and we don't have any inventive propaganda making us believe we have. Granted I don't appreciate much what they did to us on the past, but on the other hand I'm an idealist. After all, those who made decisions at that time don't rule there anymore..

I don't ask you to lionize the US. I don't lionize us. What you have to understand about the USA is that it is a polyglot of little factions. There is no real national identity because this isn't a nation. It is a bunch of people who came here seeking fortune or religious freedom and their descendents. As long as this continues to happen on an ongoing basis now, this will be true. The only common culture we are allowed to have here is money. We did have a culture at one time, based primarily upon the western European cultures which spawned us, but for the last hundred years we have been a mess. And we are getting messier and messier as time goes on. It seems that people think we don't need a common culture or soul as long as we have money. That's why I have a pretty low regard for people in general.
